Woodson Weekly is published every Monday to provide the community with important information about school life at Woodson High School.
Vision Statement
Carter G. Woodson High School is a community that embraces diversity in a culture of improvement and success that promotes academic curiosity and individual mental and physical growth.
International Night perfomances were a success
Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Community,
What an incredible week we just shared at Carter G. Woodson High School! It was a true joy to watch our students demonstrate athletic and academic excellence while sharing their rich heritage and culture with us all. This past Saturday was especially lively; our Unified Sports basketball team hosted a fantastic tournament in our gym, while our auditorium and cafeteria played host to our annual International Night. Both events perfectly captured the spirit of Woodson, allowing us to witness excellence on the court, on the stage, and even in the cafeteria during the potluck portion of the evening—a perennial favorite here at the school.
The performances at International Night, from the fashion show to the individual acts, were absolutely amazing. The talent our students display is as diverse as the cultures they share, making it a wonderful night of inclusivity and community bonding. I want to extend a sincere thank you to Annie Hadfield and Lee Hedrick for their sponsorship of For The Culture Club, and to Layla Harahsheh, Annikha Nguyen, Daniel Regalado, Mehr Josyula, Nandhitha Rajesh, Jeanne McKernan, and Saar Cohen for their tireless hard work in putting this event together.
Last week we also celebrated several of our staff stars during National School Counseling Week. I want to thank our counselors for the immense heart and hard work they put into every student who walks our halls. Their work is vital to our mission of supporting student success, and I am deeply grateful for everything they do.
I also want to take a moment to highlight the incredible work of our Math Team, who compete throughout the year in the Virginia Math League. Our team consistently ranks among the best in the state; in the latest release of contest results, Woodson ranked third overall in the state of Virginia and earned the high score for all of Fairfax County Public Schools. A huge shout-out to Pam Nowicki, Bill Daly, Hoon Kim, Dr. Amy Gallitzer, and Kate Wright for their support of these scholars. I would also like to recognize our top 14 scorers: David Vu, Shaheer Khan, Stephen Kim, Dawit Abebe, Kyle Fernandez, Miles Nousain, Sarah Easter, Lucas Shen, Khoa Nguyen, Ada Qin, Vibu Vishnuram, James Kahler, Logan Lee, and Donovan Tran.
Our athletes also saw great success last week at the District Wrestling Match. Please join me in congratulating our girls and boys teams on their amazing placements as they head into the upcoming Regional Tournament. For the girls, Dani Hyder and Nimmar Al Hussieni took 1st place; Abigail Derzanski and Michelle Carballo Arias took 2nd; and Angelina Nguyen, Shannon Close, and Sydney Jamison earned 3rd. For the boys, Ochirdari Otgonbaatar took 2nd place, while Alex Orea and Adam Underwood both took 3rd.
Looking ahead, this week is P.S. I Love You Week at Woodson. This initiative promotes kindness and mental health awareness, spreading the essential message that "you are not alone." Organized by our leadership students, the week includes opportunities for students to reflect on the meaning of the movement, enjoy treats, exchange kind notes, and even meet with therapy dogs. Most importantly, please don't forget to wear purple this Friday to show your support for mental health awareness.
In recognition of Black History Month, please mark your calendars for our celebration on February 25th at 6:00 p.m. in our auditorium, titled "Rooted in Resilience, Echoes of Excellence." We are proud to host this event for Fairfax County Public Schools for the second year in a row. This month holds a special significance at our school, as our namesake, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, was the founder of Black History Month. To honor his legacy and renew the commitment made at our rededication ceremony, we shared a video with our students today which we hope you will enjoy as well: Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month
As a final quick reminder, there will be no school for students next Monday and Tuesday in observance of Presidents Day and a scheduled teacher workday.
I hope you have a wonderful week, Woodson!

FCPS Offers Take-Home Meal Kits for Fasting Students
FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.
Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.
Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests.
Submit a fasting meal kit request form by these deadlines:
- By Wednesday, February 11, 2026 for the week of February 18, 2026
- By Monday, February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
- By Monday, February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
- By Monday, March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026

Academic Advising Updates
Last week, school counselors began holding individual meetings with 11th graders for them to select classes for next year. Counselors will continue to meet with juniors through history classes until February 18th. Counselors will then meet with 10th graders through English classes between February 18th and March 2nd, and then with 9th graders through science classes between March 3rd and March 16th. If your child is absent on the day of their scheduled meeting with their counselor, their counselor will schedule another time to meet with them in the coming days. Every student will be seen and will have the opportunity to select classes for next year.
During this time, we encourage parents at home to review their child’s planned course selections with them. There is a wealth of information available on the Woodson HS Academic Advising website, as well as the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. Counselors have spoken with students about making informed decisions when it comes to selecting classes for next year, so please utilize the information on these sites to get informed so that your child can make the best course selections for themselves for next school year.
After counselors complete seeing students in each grade level, the Student Services office will send individual emails to parents with a list of their child’s course selections for review. This information can also be in found in both SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE under the Course Selections tab. Please be sure to review your child’s course selections for next year after they meet with their counselor. Any course request change must be submitted to your child’s school counselor by Friday, March 27th. Please know that changes will be accommodated on a space available basis and change requests are not guaranteed.
Thank you for your support and partnership during academic advising!
