  Message from Principal Vereb
Principal Reflections from the Hive
This week was a reminder that even when schedules shift, the strength, care, and professionalism of the Herndon Elementary community remain constant.
With a school closure on Monday and two-hour delays from Tuesday through Friday, flexibility was essential. I am grateful to our students, staff, and families for navigating a unique week with patience and partnership while keeping learning and relationships at the center.
We were proud to celebrate our school counselors during National School Counseling Week. Ms. Bryant, Ms. Boyer, and Mr. Falkey play a critical role in supporting our students’ academic success, social-emotional growth, and overall well-being. Their care, advocacy, and leadership make a daily difference for our students and families, and we are grateful for all that they do.
Throughout the week, we also celebrated classroom and grade-level attendance bright spots in the cafeteria. These moments matter. Strong attendance supports learning, connection, and routine, and it was energizing to highlight the collective efforts of students, staff, and families who are working together to make every day count.
Our focus on continuous improvement remained strong. I continued meeting with staff through individual one-on-one conversations, and we welcomed central office leaders to Herndon ES to engage in thoughtful dialogue around our data. Together, we examined student growth in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and attendance. We are proud of the progress our students are making and remain committed to using data responsibly to guide instruction and support.
On Thursday evening, I appreciated the opportunity to meet with our PTA Executive Board. Our partnership with families is essential, and these conversations help ensure we remain aligned in supporting students and strengthening our school community.
We closed the week with a visit from our Regional Assistant Superintendent, followed by a joyful PTA fundraiser at Chuck E. Cheese. It was wonderful to see families, staff, and students together in celebration and community.
Even in a week shaped by weather-related adjustments, the heart of our work remained steady. Thank you for your flexibility, collaboration, and continued commitment to our students and one another.
Together, we continue to lead in the light and learn best in community.
With gratitude, Dr. Monika Vereb Principal, Herndon Elementary School 🐝

Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free!
Please remind your child that cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) cannot be used during passing periods. Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool, with some limited exceptions for students with IEPs.
Phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) — except for high school students during lunchtime in designated lunch spaces.
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school. Visit our Cell Phone Policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions, including consequences for cell phone policy violations and exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call your child’s school.
Kindergarten Open Houses Scheduled for This Spring
Kindergarten open houses are being held this spring to give parents of students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at their school. View an alphabetical list of open houses. Contact your school directly if it is not included in the list. Herndon Elementary's open house is April 6 at 10am.
FCPS recognizes that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.
There’s also an easy-to-follow five-step process for parents registering their children for kindergarten. Register your child today!
