- Academic Advising Updates
National School Counselor Week
- This week (February 2-6, 2026) is National School Counseling Week! National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. School counselors are engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in partnership with families as they encounter challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an education system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.
- The West Potomac School Counseling Team is made up of 11 school counselors, one On-Time Graduation Counselor, and our College and Career Center Specialist. The WPHS team is a Recognized ASCA Model Program with Distinction.
- Parents, students, WPHS Community – if you want to send your school counselor a quick note of appreciation, you can fill out this google form!
Academic Advising and 26-27 Course Selection
- Academic Advising season is here and to date we have had great advising meetings with our Rising 9th graders at SMS and our current 11th graders through English. Those meetings continue this week. The remaining schedule is as follows:
- February 9 – February 18 – 10th Graders via Health and PE 10
- February 23 – March 3 – 9th Graders via Health and PE 9
- Once course requests are selected both Students and Parents can review those selections via StudentVue and Parent Vue. Any changes must be sent directly to the school counselor.
-
Please be mindful of the upcoming deadlines to change course requests:
-
March 10 – Deadline to email any course requests changes to School Counselors.
-
March 11- April 19 – No changes to course requests are accepted due to HS Staffing Meetings
-
April 20-June 17 – Course selection changes are accepted through the HS counselor on a space-available basis.
- A reminder that our course selection portion of the WPHS website has a wealth of resources including the Course Catalog, Course Offerings Sheets, Curriculum Night Presentations and Student Videos. It also outlines the WPHS Student Services schedule change policy including the eligible and ineligible changes allowed once school starts. A reminder that students cannot change electives after June 17 including when school starts.
