Roadrunner Rundown
February 3, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
We hope the snow brought some spontaneous fun, whether inside or outside, in spite of the ice that made shoveling so challenging. Staff and students were excited to see one another and share their snow stories.
We cannot shout out enough our custodial team: Rich, Sharron, Jessica, Pablo, and Heifeng worked tirelessly to clear our walkways and entrances. Hours and hours in the cold breaking ice and moving chunks to provide for clear pathways. Andrea, our Plant Operations Manager, supported getting a bobcat here yesterday which helped us avoid many of the challenges you heard about over the weekend a non-factor today. We are continuing to work to make the arrival and dismissal around the snow and ice as safe as possible. If you see our custodial team, please express your thanks.
Thanks to the many community members who took care of neighborhood walkways and supported their neighbors in numerous ways.
Have a great week.
Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

Strong Second Half
Next week we start the 2nd half of the school year. This is a good time to reflect on the routines that have worked well and to begin new ones if needed. A few things to remember: get plenty of rest, come to school even when you don’t feel like it (of course, stay home if you are sick) and choose to give your best every day. These practices will allow us to end the year better than ever.
It’s time to brainstorm project ideas for STEAM Night!
Calling all Marshall Road students! You are invited to design a tri-fold display that showcases an experiment or a passion connected to the STEAM disciplines. Projects will be proudly displayed at school and celebrated during our annual STEAM Night on Thursday, February 26, featuring exciting hands-on activities with real-world STEAM experts! Tri-fold boards will be available in the main office, and all students who create a project will be entered into a raffle. Many volunteers will be needed to help with activities so please sign up here to support this inspiring event.

MRES Staff Spotlight
Hooray for Ms. Moore, one of our Special Education Teachers who is our spotlight of the week! Ms. Moore has been part of the Marshall Road Community since 2014 when her son started 1st grade. She was very active in the PTA and even served as the President for two years! In 2016, Ms. Moore started working at the school as an IA in Ms. Villanueva’s classroom. For the past 7 years she has been a Special Education teacher and has taught every grade except 6th.
When asked what she loves most about MRES she said “Marshall Road is a very special place! My favorite part of being a Roadrunner is the commitment to making everyone feel welcomed and valued.”
Ms. Moore and her family live in Vienna and her two teens go to Madison. They love watching movies together every weekend. We are so glad Ms. Moore is part of the Roadrunner team!

Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 - March 19, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Important Meal Kit Information:
- Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
- Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
- Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
- Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
- February 1, for week of February 18
- February 16, for the week of February 23
- February 23, for the week of March 2
- March 2, for the week of March 9
- March 9, for the week of March 16
Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.
K&K Student Accident Insurance
Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents may want to consider if purchasing voluntary student insurance is appropriate for their family. K & K Insurance Group offers student accident insurance coverage that parents may purchase. For families without other medical insurance, this plan may be a helpful resource. Additionally, for families who already have coverage, this plan may help offset costs such as deductibles and co-pays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year. The enrollment forms can be found on the FCPS public webpage here.
