Dear Terraset Families,

We hope you enjoyed the snowy week off last week thanks to our first big storm of 2026! A HUGE thank you goes out to our custodial crew for working so hard in bitter cold all week to clear our grounds. We are excited to be back in school this week and have many learning opportunities planned including celebrating and deepening our understandings of Black History Month and our 2nd graders will visit the National Museum of of the American Indian.

Additionally, prior to our snow break, we were incredibly impressed by the outstanding talent of our students that participated in Broadway Night at South Lakes High School demonstrated- kudos to each of them!

Finally, I hope you will be able to join us tomorrow night from 6:30pm-7:30pm for our February PTO meeting. Our own Suzanne White, Math Resource Teacher, will be presenting on current approaches to teaching math at the elementary level and you won’t want to miss this meaningful information!

Yours in partnership,

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

🚗Kiss & Ride This Week

  • We expect a greater number of families than usual to utilize our kiss and ride for arrival and dismissal this week, due to the lingering snow and ice.
  • We expect longer than average wait times in order to safely allow students to exit and enter vehicles.
  • Exiting the school driveway remains right-turn only during arrival and dismissal due to our volume of traffic.
  • During arrival, both the main door and Door 2 will be used to welcome students as quickly as possible.
  • During dismissal, students will be loaded closer to Door 1 than usual, as the median between the driveway and sidewalk remains ice covered.

🚌Busses This Week

  • There may be delays both in the morning and afternoon this week. Check out the Here Comes The Bus Mobile App for real-time bus information.
  • Please support your students with safely waiting at bus stops and boarding/disembarking buses.

We can't wait to see you there! 🏕️📚

📝It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

📝Survey of Preschool Children

If you have a preschool-aged child who is eligible for kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year, please use this link to access the form. Return completed forms to the office no later than February 27, 2026.

If you know of any children in your neighborhood who also have rising kindergartners, please share this information or ask them to reach out to Shannon Johnson at 703-390-5602.

Virginia law, Section 22.1-254 requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2025, must enroll in kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year. If your child turns five on or before 09/30/2026 and you do not wish to enroll him/her in kindergarten, please let us know in writing.

The form can be submitted to Shannon Johnson via email or by dropping it off at the main office. Thank you for your assistance in helping us identify school-age children.

🥫Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
  • February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
  • February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
  • March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

🤒When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.
