Chantilly Band Day:

Sixth grade band students from across the Chantilly pyramid were invited to Rocky Run Middle School for Chantilly Band Day during the January 30 Teacher Workday. This special performance opportunity gave students a preview of what band class is like at the middle school level. More than 150 sixth grade students worked with band directors Mr. Daniel Hill of Rocky Run Middle School and Mrs. Tracy Magwire of Franklin Middle School, along with other FCPS music instructors. Students received instrument-specific instruction and also rehearsed together as a full band, experiencing firsthand how middle school band classes are structured. Current Rocky Run Middle School and Chantilly High School band students assisted throughout the day, helping to inspire and support the next generation of musicians. After only a few hours of practice, students concluded the event by performing a wonderful concert for their families. It was truly a great day of music-making!

counseling week

Dear GBW Community,

This week, as we recognize National School Counseling Week, we want to take a moment to shine a well-deserved spotlight on two pillars of our school family: Mrs. Brooke Varma and Ms. Megan McAndrew. While "School Counselor" is their official title, the roles they fill for us daily are immeasurable. They are our listeners, our advocates, our problem-solvers, and our steady hands during difficult times. The dedication Mrs. Varma and Ms. McAndrew show to our students, staff, and families goes far beyond the standard school day. Whether they are helping a student navigate a challenge, providing a listening ear to a colleague, or supporting a family through a transition, their work is defined by a level of care that is truly "above and beyond." To Mrs. Varma and Ms. McAndrew: Thank you for the countless hours you spend ensuring every child feels seen, heard, and supported. Our school is a kinder, brighter, and safer place because of your tireless commitment. Please join us in sharing your appreciation for these two incredible educators this week!

With deepest gratitude,

Mr. Blount and Mrs. Odom

Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
  • February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
  • February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
  • March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

2026-27 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please help us with projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2026, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2026, please complete this form and return it by February 7, 2026. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2026-2027 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at pli@fcps.edu.  We thank you in advance for returning the form by February 7, 2026.

Learn About Kindergarten at Greenbriar West ES

Our kindergarten open house is being held on Monday, April 6, 2pm-3:30pm] to give parents of students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at our school.

We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Greenbriar West ES

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

🚗 Kiss and Ride Reminder

To help keep our drop-off process safe and efficient, we kindly remind Kiss and Ride families to remain in their vehicles during morning drop-off. If students need assistance getting items out of the car, our safety patrols and staff members are available and happy to help. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep everyone safe at GBW!

Please consider donating snacks for students at Greenbriar West Elementary! These snacks are kept in classrooms and with our counseling staff to help support students who don't have a snack during the school day.
