Dear Garfield Families,
We truly miss our Eagles and hope everyone is staying safe, warm, and cozy during these chilly winter days. As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we appreciate your continued partnership as we navigate winter weather together.
As we look ahead to next week, please note that some snow and ice may still be present on sidewalks and street corners as students arrive at and depart from school. We ask that families take a few moments to talk with students about safely walking to school and standing patiently at bus stops. With many families utilizing Kiss & Ride, we also appreciate your patience as traffic moves through the line. Additionally, students should come to school dressed for the cold with appropriate winter gear—coats, hats, gloves, and long pants—as temperatures will remain below freezing during the mornings next week.
As winter weather continues, the FCPS website is typically the first-place emergency closings or delays are posted. Thank you for staying connected and informed.
Behind the scenes, there is a dedicated team working tirelessly to make sure our building and grounds are safe and ready for our Eagles each day:
💙 Thank You, Garfield Custodians! 💙 Our Eagle community is incredibly grateful for our custodial team who went above and beyond—braving the cold, ice, and long hours—to ensure our nest was safe, clean, and ready for students’ return. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment help our Eagles soar, and it does not go unnoticed.
Thank you, Mr. Molina, Mrs. Alcantara De Palacios, and Mrs. Barrera Dr Rivera, for all that you do for Garfield, every single day!
Again, we appreciate our GES families, for your continued support of Garfield Elementary School. We wish you a safe, warm, and restful weekend.
Blessings and Joy,
Mrs. Peerman and Ms. Manning

Laptops, iPads & Chargers!
Parents and caregivers - We want to send a gentle reminder for you and your children to be sure to pack up school laptops or iPads and any chargers in the black bag they brought home just before this extended time out of school as they get ready for their return. We use these devices for daily work as well as testing, so it is essential they get back to school, preferably charged and ready to go. Thank you!
Virginia Kindness Week:
February 9th-13th
Schools can promote and foster kindness all school year. However, each year in Virginia we have celebrated kindness week during the second week in February. The purpose of Kindness Week is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier, and more inclusive place to live, work, learn, and play.
We invite students and staff to participate in our Virginia Kindness Spirit Week and encourage all to complete the Kindness Action of the Day. Additional ideas are linked in the spirit week flyer.
Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends. Important Meal Kit Information: · Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid). · Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. · Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day. ·
Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines: ·
- February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
- February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
- February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026

Winter Resources for Families
A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.
Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!
We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.
