The WFES Spelling Bee had 45 great spellers showing us their incredible spelling talent over 13 rounds! Our winner was Max; runner up was a "spell-off" between Tiffany (left) and Liya (center), with Tiffany earning 2nd place. Everyone did such a great job! Thanks to Ms. Rapuano for organizing this event every year for our students.
Dear Wakefield Forest Families,
First and foremost, thank you. I want to express my sincere gratitude for your patience and flexibility over the past week. Dealing with unexpected snow days and delayed starts is never easy, and I know how much it disrupts your family's rhythm. Your support while we navigated the elements truly highlights the strength of our school community. Our custodian, facilities and transportation teams worked very hard to get schools ready for students.
Behind the scenes, our staff have been working diligently to transition students back into their routines. We are currently in the process of rescheduling missed meetings; if you had an appointment impacted by the weather, please look for a follow-up email to reschedule.
Highlights from the Week
Despite the frosty start, it has been a vibrant week inside our halls:
-
New Electives: Our 5th and 6th graders kicked off their new elective rotations! From cooking to drama, the energy in on Friday afternoons has been electric as students dive into these new areas of interest.
-
PTA Spelling Bee: A huge "B-R-A-V-O" to all our participants! The Spelling Bee was a resounding success. It was wonderful to see our students showcase their hard work and poise under pressure. A special thanks to our PTA volunteers for organizing such a seamless and exciting event.
Looking Ahead
As we settle back into learning, we are focused on keeping the momentum going for the second half of the year.
Warmly,
Sharyn Prindle
Principal

Regular attendance at school is essential for building skills that help with students' success throughout their education and beyond. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.
Visit our website for more attendance resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
Missing a coat? Brrrr...it's REALLY COLD outside and the lost and found is still full of many warm coats, jackets, sweatshirts and more. Due to the snow storm and days out of school, perhaps you realized your child was missing a coat? We will keep the lost and found accessible this week, and donate it on February 13th.

- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.
After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation or any other introductory events each school may host. Save the date...our Kindergarten orientation/open house is being held on Friday, April 10th, to give parents of students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at our school.
We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out if you choose.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
