A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.
Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!
We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.

Charlie, our wonderful therapy dog here at Hayfield Elementary, has a published book about himself. On February 13th and March 6th, students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will have the opportunity to visit with Charlie and his mom, Peggy Gendive, the book’s author. Peggy will be reading excerpts from the book. The title of the book is “Charlie, the Border Collie Without a Job” and it is written in English and Spanish.
The book is available for purchase at Amazon and at the Barnes & Noble store in Springfield. If you choose to purchase a copy, be sure to send the book to school with your child so that the author can sign it. All students in all grades will be able get their purchased book signed by the author.
It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!
Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.
Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.
If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.
FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.
💻 Try Online Registration
Parents may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process. When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Read more about the registration process.
For more information, contact our Student Information Assistant, Jailene Acevedo, by phone at 703-924-4507 to set up an appointment.
Hayfield Elementary School's Kindergarten Orientation will be Wednesday, March 25th at 2:00 p.m.
The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases. All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Students who do not meet this requirement will be unable to start school in the fall.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.
Action Required: Please provide one of the following immunization documents to your child’s school as soon as possible:
- An immunization record showing that your child has received at least one dose of each of the required immunizations listed above. Families can request immunization records free of charge through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS), a statewide registry system. If your child was immunized outside Virginia, you can get records from those states’ systems.
- Submit your child’s immunization record through ParentVUE using the Online Verification/Update (OVU) Packet.
- A note from a healthcare provider stating the date the vaccination(s) was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption.
Immunization appointments are available. Inspire Health Alliance will be providing immunizations for currently enrolled FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Visit the Inspire Immunization Events Student Registration webpage to schedule an appointment.
Additional Immunization Resources are available.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Please contact the school office if you have any questions.

Help Those Experiencing Food Insecurity
|
Throughout the months of January and February, Fairfax County Public Libraries are collecting donations of food for Food for Others, Koinonia Community Services, and Lorton Community Action Center. During this food drive, community members can drop off unexpired, commercially produced food items - click here for specific food requests - to any FCPL branch during regular hours.
Non-profits cannot accept homemade items, opened items, food that is not labeled, cooked food, glass containers, or expired Items.
Fairfax County Public Library Closures
There are currently library closures for two of the public libraries nearby.
-
Kingstowne Community Library's current location will close to the public starting February 15, 2026, to prepare for its upcoming move to the new Kingstowne Regional Library located in the Franconia Governmental Center.
-
Richard Byrd Library is undergoing boiler replacement and remains closed until February 17.
Cold Weather
As temperatures and wind chills are low, please ensure students come to school with coats, gloves, and hats each day.
Many of our older students choose not to wear warm clothing, but when it is extremely cold, this can impact our ability to safely hold outdoor recess. Your help in reminding students to dress appropriately is greatly appreciated.
Late Arrivals
If your child arrives after the 8:35 a.m. bell, an adult caregiver/parent must walk the student into the building and sign them in at the main office. This helps us maintain accurate attendance and ensures student safety.
Visitor Badges – Including FCPS Employees
We are fortunate to have many parents and caregivers who also work for FCPS. However, unless an adult is on official FCPS business at Hayfield ES, they must sign in and wear a Hayfield ES visitor badge, even if they have an FCPS employee badge.
This ensures that all visitors are accounted for and helps us maintain a safe, secure environment for students and staff. Information about this process is posted at the check-in station in the front office.
Families Attending Lunch
Families are welcome to join their child for lunch after signing into the main office and receiving a visitor badge. To support a safe and positive lunchtime environment:
- Please sit at the designated overflow table.
- Adults may sit only with their own child.
- Photos or videos of other students are not permitted.
These practices help us maintain smooth cafeteria operations and protect student privacy.
