February is Black History Month
This month we will share information about some lesser-known Black historical figures.
Did you know that Claudette Colvin (September 1939- January 2026 was arrested at age 15 for refusing to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, months before Rosa Parks?
On March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin was on her way home from school in Montgomery, Alabama, when she was asked to give up her seat on the bus for a white woman. The 15-year-old refused and said, "It's my constitutional right to sit here as much as that lady. I paid my fare, it's my constitutional right," according to Biography.
Colvin was then arrested and fought for the desegregation of the bus system as one of the plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle.
"I felt like Sojourner Truth was pushing down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman was pushing down on the other, saying, 'Sit down girl!' I was glued to my seat," Colvin told Newsweek after the bus incident.
Learn more about Ms. Colvin here.
February is also Love the Bus Month
February is Love the Bus Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the transportation professionals who safely support students every day across Fairfax County Public Schools. This includes our drivers, attendants, floaters, trainers, supervisors, mechanics, dispatchers, and support staff.
Take a moment to say Thank YOU to our hardworking, dedicated Bus Drivers!
