snow removal

Naomi and the custodial team braved the cold to remove the snow and ice at GBE.

Dear GBE Families,

We are wrapping up the first half of the school year in a memorable way! I hope everyone is staying safe and warm following this winter storm. The amount of ice on top of the snow has created significant challenges in clearing roads and driveways. I want to share our incredible appreciation for our custodial staff. They have been reporting to GBE since Monday, working tirelessly to remove snow and ice from our parking lots and sidewalks. We are so grateful for their dedication to our building during these cold days!

I know winter weather is on everyone’s mind. I did want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments from our first half of the school year. GBE’s performance on the Virginia Department of Education’s new School Performance Support Framework was “on-track,” with no reporting groups identified for additional support or improvement in the new system. Our growth points in math and reading increased in a positive direction. Our readiness points increased due to our improved chronic absenteeism rate.

We will continue to build on this success at GBE. We are focused on our second year of Benchmark implementation in literacy. Our staff continues to collaborate with families to communicate student progress toward meeting and exceeding grade-level reading expectations for all students. Reading Plans have been implemented in all grade levels this year for any student not making adequate literacy progress. These plans support our work in monitoring the progress of each GBE student.

The number of students enrolled in advanced math at GBE continues to increase each school year. For the first time, we have sixth-grade students enrolled in Algebra 1 at GBE! We will continue to set high expectations for all students to reach their full potential in mathematics. FCPS is using a new MAP assessment this school year to measure math progress. Our teams review MAP math data to ensure each student’s strengths and needs are addressed every day.

In addition to our academic success, GBE launched its second year of the Watch D.O.G.S. program, achieved the Purple Star Designation, and celebrated our community through multiple events. GBE is an exceptional school thanks to the incredible partnerships among our staff, families, PTA, and students. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we work together for our school community. GBE is a special place because you are a part of it!

We have an exciting second half of the school year ahead. Our 2nd Annual GBE STEAM Fest will be held on Friday, February 27, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. We are looking forward to an evening of discovery, experiments, and curiosity-powered fun for all ages. We are also excited for our Spotlight on Learning and One Greenbriar Basketball Game this spring. It’s going to be an awesome spring at GBE!

Finally, I wanted to share that Mr. Whitehouse will be reporting to Eagle View Elementary as their new assistant principal starting Monday. We will miss him at GBE, and we are grateful for his incredible leadership. We will schedule a time for him to visit GBE soon so he can see our students, as his official last three days were all snow days.

Take care, and we will see you all again soon!

Sincerely,
Dave Pietzman, NBCT
