Taking the Plunge for Special Olympics

Annandale High School staff and students recently participated in the Special Olympics Virginia Polar Plunge, coming together to support inclusion and student leadership. Led by Assistant Principal Jae Lee and Special Olympics coach Katie Shaw, the team was the top fundraising group at the event, raising over $11,000 to support Annandale’s Special Olympics program and Special Olympics Virginia. The event highlighted the strong sense of community at Annandale, as staff and students braved the cold together to support a shared cause. Their efforts help expand opportunities for students locally and support Special Olympics teams across Virginia.

Important Information

Winter Resources for Families: A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit the FCPS winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey: In the coming weeks, FCPS will be administering the Student Experience Survey to all students in grades 3-12. It will help the school division better understand students’ experiences in our schools. The survey takes about 30 minutes and will be completed during school on Tuesday, February 24. If you would like to view the survey, please visit the Student Experience Survey webpage. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, you may opt them out using the online form on the Student Experience Survey webpage or by completing the paper opt-out form by Friday, February 13. Thank you for supporting our efforts to make improvements in FCPS schools. If you have questions about the Student Experience Survey, please contact research@fcps.edu.

Prepare for Winter Weather: Winter weather has arrived! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS. FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated. Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.

Lightspeed Parent Portal Allows Parents to Manage Student Screen Time: FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage screen time on FCPS-issued devices. Through the portal, parents can control their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing during designated After-School Hours while students are off the FCPS network. These controls are active Monday - Friday from 3:30pm to 6:00am (even on student holidays) and all day Saturday and Sunday. They do not affect district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email. For more information about the Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Sharing Stories Through Theater: Annandale High School Theater Arts 1 students adapted the children’s books Where the Wild Things Are and Dragons Love Tacos 2 into stage performances for kindergarten, first, and second grade students at Annandale Terrace. The project, now in its third year, gives high school students an opportunity to build performance and collaboration skills while connecting with younger learners. The performances were warmly received by Annandale Terrace students and teachers and highlighted the power of storytelling across grade levels.

Dance Team Invitational Achievement: The Annandale High School dance team competed at the Brooke Point Invitational, a highly competitive event that brings together dance teams from across Virginia. Competing in the Small Varsity Hip Hop division, the team earned a fifth place finish, representing a significant milestone and a best performance for the program. Students set a goal to improve their overall score by applying judges’ feedback from earlier in the season, and their performance resulted in an 11 point score increase. Congratulations to all of our dancers.

Choosing Learning on a Saturday Morning: More than 130 students chose to spend their Saturday morning at school participating in Academic Coaching, reflecting their dedication as the quarter came to a close. Students worked in the library from 8:30am-11:00am receiving academic support from Annandale Staff. Our Academic Advising page has the grade level information presented by counselors and the course selection Google forms that students must complete. We encourage you to visit this site with your student to discuss courses for next year. Here are some questions you can use to engage with your student about course selection:

  • Which classes most excite you about next year?
  • When looking at your classes, what are your electives and why did you select those?
  • What type of diploma are you going for?
  • Where would you like to be challenged?
  • Where do you think you might need support?

Please reach out to our counselors if any questions or concerns arise. Their emails and phone numbers can be found on our Student Services page. We are here to help and look forward to supporting our students through this process! In addition, below is an overview of how we are supporting students with the course selection process.
