Principal's Message January 23, 2026

Dear Stone Families,

As we head into the weekend with winter weather approaching, please stay informed of any weather-related delays or cancellations by monitoring local news outlets or the FCPS website.

Next week marks the end of the second quarter and will be a short week for students. If we experience any significant weather-related closures, we will adjust plans as necessary and communicate updates promptly.

Please join me in congratulating the following students on their hard work and achievements:

Congratulations to our Band students—Aston F., Cooper C., Cortland S., Kylee C., Vaibhav M., Christopher O., Matthew L., Brooke K., Emi M., and Ethan L.—who will represent Stone Middle School at the All-District Band event in February. We are very proud of you!

Stay warm and have a safe weekend.

Sincerely,
Sonya Williams
Principal

WIDA Testing Reminder

In February, our multilingual learners will participate in the WIDA assessment, which measures progress in English language development through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

The assessment will take place on the following dates:

  • Beginners: Monday–Wednesday, 2/2–2/4
  • Intermediate learners: Monday–Wednesday, 2/9–2/11
  • Advanced learners: Monday–Wednesday, 2/23–2/25

This is an exciting opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. Families can support their child’s success by encouraging plenty of rest, a nutritious breakfast, and a positive mindset on testing days. We look forward to seeing our multilingual learners confidently share their progress and shine with Panther Pride.

Upcoming Testing Reminders for Families

As we head into testing season, we want to thank you for helping students stay ready—both on testing days and on regular school days. Please continue to remind your child to bring their Chromebook to school every day fully charged, along with their charger and wired headphones. Having these items each day helps ensure testing runs smoothly and minimizes lost instructional time.

If your child has misplaced their Chromebook charger, a replacement can be purchased through MySchoolBucks or by bringing $27.75 to the front office (cash or check made out to Stone MS). A receipt will be issued, and your child can then pick up the charger from the Tech Office.

If headphones are needed, there are several affordable, student-friendly options available that work well for testing. These work well and are affordable. If you are unable to afford headphones for your child, please contact the front office and we will gladly support you in this effort.

We appreciate your ongoing support in helping our students feel prepared, confident, and ready to show their Panther Pride by giving their best effort during upcoming testing 🐾✨

Prepare for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.

⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.
