Dear Haycock Families,
Even if school is closed due to weather like today, learning can continue! We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home. There are additional FCPS resources available for learning and teachers have updated some opportunities in Schoology.
Please be on the lookout for FCPS messages through news outlets, social media, and official communications regarding any further potential school delays or closures this week.
Our custodial team will be working hard to clear the sidewalks surrounding Haycock and our parking lots to make our return possible. Please also make sure you have shoveled and cleared your own sidewalks to make it safe for our walking students to return to school.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at last week's band concerts! Many thanks to Allison Parrell, David Cho, and Ralph Galyean, our band teachers/substitutes, who prepared our students so very well for their winter band concerts. They sounded fantastic!
We monitor the weather daily for low temperatures, wind chill advisories/warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. However, on most days our students go outside for recess. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu
Heather Boyd, AP HABoyd@fcps.edu
Krystal Styles, AP krstyles@fcps.edu

🖊️Author Visit on Friday, March 6
On Friday, March 6, we are excited to welcome the mother-son creative team Carole Boston Weatherford (author) and Jeffery Boston Weatherford (illustrator) to Haycock! They will share their talents with our students during special grade-level assemblies. Many thanks to the Haycock PTA for supporting this opportunity for our students.
Carole Boston Weatherford, the daughter of a printer, was practically born with ink in her blood. She began writing at age six and soon saw her poems published. She has written more than 80 books and earned numerous honors, including two NAACP Image Awards and 18 American Library Association Youth Media Awards—among them a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Award, and four Caldecott Honors. Her career achievements have also been recognized with the North Carolina Award for Literature, the Children’s Book Guild Nonfiction Award, and induction into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. A retired English professor, she lives in Maryland.
Jeffery Boston Weatherford was born with such distinctive hands that his grandmother predicted he would grow up to do important work—and she was right! An award-winning illustrator, Jeffery has collaborated with Carole on three books. He was a Romare Bearden Scholar at Howard University, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Jeffery has performed his poetry and exhibited his artwork across the United States, West Africa, and the Middle East. He lives in North Carolina.
