From the Desk of Dr. Williams

Dear Woodley Hills Family,

Ā

We had such a blast at our Family Math Night this past week! It was so much fun watching students estimate how much snow we might get this Sunday, and I was really impressed by all the clever math thinking. Seeing the building filled with so many smiling faces and seeing our students get excited about numbers truly made my week. The paper airplane building and throwing competition was definitely a highlight, and the energy in the hallway was just awesome as those planes took off. Thank you all for coming out and making the night so special by jumping into the activities with your children. We are so lucky to have such a great community here at Woodley Hills, and I can’t wait to see what next week brings!

Ā

Dr. LaChelle R. Williams, Principal

Calling All Career Day Volunteers!Ā

Our annual Career Day is coming up on March 4, and we need your help to make it an inspiring experience for our students! Career Day gives our elementary students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of careers, ask questions, and begin imagining the many possibilities for their future.

If you or someone you know would like to share about their career, please consider volunteering and sharing the Career Day flyerĀ with friends, family members, or community connections. We currently have 6 presenters signed up, and our goal is to reach at least 21 presentersĀ so students can learn about many different career paths.

Students are curious about all kindsĀ of careers. Some examples of careers students enjoy learning about include (but are not limited to):

  • Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
  • Teachers, principals, and school staff
  • Police officers, firefighters, and EMTs
  • Engineers and architects
  • Scientists and environmental workers
  • Artists, musicians, and performers
  • Chefs and bakers
  • Military service members (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
  • Veterinarians and animal care workers
  • Athletes and coaches
  • Technology and computer-related careers
  • Entrepreneurs and business owners
  • Construction workers and skilled trades

Thank you for helping us show our students the many paths their futures can take!Ā If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gibbs or Ms. Thompson.

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.Ā
  2. Identify your local school.Ā
  3. Gather documents.Ā
  4. Fill out forms.Ā
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process. For more information, call our student information assistant/registrar at Sandra Guzman, at 703-799-2001, or by e-mail at sguzman@fcps.edu .Ā

šŸ’» Try Online Registration

Parents may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process. When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account.Ā

Weather video

ā„ļø Prepare for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.Ā

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.

⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.

Ā

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.Ā

Ā

Enhancing Safety and Security for Staff and Students

School safety and security are being enhanced across FCPS with a new emergency management system. The system includes sensors installed in schools and a wearable emergency response button (ERB) for staff.Ā

The button allows staff to quickly and discreetly request help and, once pressed, they provide location information within the school. The ERB will only work on school grounds and does not rely on cellular service. It is not meant to replace calling 911, but is an additional safety tool that can be used if calling 911 may not be safe or practical.Ā

Learn more about the emergency management system. You may submit questions to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.
