Huge Thank You to Our Custodians!
Building Supervisor, Ms. Maria, leads our team in clearing a safe path to classrooms.
A massive thank you to our incredible custodial team! When the snow stopped falling, their mission was just beginning. The team has been working tirelessly to clear ice and snow, ensuring students and staff can safely access our classrooms.
When we return to school, please take a moment to thank our custodians for the remarkable care they show our community. We truly appreciate their dedication to maintaining a safe, clean campus every day—especially in the wake of this recent winter storm.
Snow Day Meal Kits
Feeding Students During Inclement Weather
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) makes sure every student has healthy meals, even when schools are closed for snowy weather. In an effort to support students who may be experiencing food insecurity, Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is providing Snow Day Meal Kits on Wednesday, January 28.
These kits include everything a student needs for the day. Each kit contains:
- A school breakfast
- A school lunch
- A healthy snack
- A school supper meal
The meals in these kits are the same nutritious foods served on our regular school menus.
Meal kits are available for all children under the age of 18. There is no cost for these meals. Only one kit can be given per child. Children do not need to be present to pick up the kits. No proof of eligibility or identification is required.
Parents and guardians can visit Herndon High School on Wednesday, January 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect their student’s meal kit.
More information is available on the Food and Nutrition Webpage

This excellent daily attendance does not happen by chance. We recognize our teachers for fostering welcoming classroom communities that students look forward to coming to. We also appreciate you, Dranesville families, for prioritizing your student's daily school attendance. We appreciate your thoughtful planning of appointments and vacations so that students are present for instruction.
The 100th day of school coming up. We look forward to celebrating 100 days of our teachers teaching and our students learning. Classes with 100% attendance on the 100th day of school will be invited to an attenDance celebration and Pie the Principal event. We'll prepare five pies for the sweet celebration!
Reading Challenge to Community of Readers
This year, our school community embraced the "Six Seven" trend that took off at the start of the school year. We challenged students to read six or seven books in the six to seven weeks leading up to winter break. This challenge encouraged them to read books from cover to cover to get to know characters, explore new cultures, build vocabulary, and become stronger readers and writers. We are seeing a strong correlation between students reading habits and their performance on midyear literacy assessments.
The "Six Seven Reading Challenge" has truly inspired our students and fostered a vibrant culture of reading. Students are diving into books from our classroom, school, and community libraries. They are also accessing books on myOn. We love seeing the pride on a student's face when they discuss a book they’ve recently finished. It is exciting to hear a student explain how they relate to a specific character, and equally sweet when a student shares a recipe they tried from a book—along with the book and recipe they plan to try next!
We look forward to hearing about the books that our students are reading this week and adding those books to our school-wide reading log. We must be close to our goal of reading 3,000 books!
