Standing Ovation for Our Incredible Custodian Team 👏❄️

Custodian

While most of us were bundled up inside, our amazing custodian crew was out all last week tackling the “snowcrete.” They worked tirelessly to clear walkways, entrances, and ramps across our campus to ensure Pine Spring is safe, accessible, and ready for students on Tuesday.

Because of their grit, teamwork, and pride in our school, our community can return with confidence. This work is not easy, but it is absolutely essential. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication, perseverance, and care for our students and staff.

Laptop Reminder for Tuesday💻

As we return to school after more than a week of snow and ice days, we ask families to please help students be ready for learning on Tuesday. All students should bring their school-issued laptops/iPads fully charged and return their chargers as well. Having charged devices will allow teachers to jump right back into instruction without interruption. Thank you for your support in helping us start the week strong!

Seeing Different Perspectives in Language Arts

Benchmark Unit 4 in Language Arts is about points of view. Students in K-5 will be learning about why and how people create stories, and how to understand different perspectives. Grade six students will learn how a person’s life shapes their point of view.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: Have you ever disagreed with a friend? How did you see things differently?
  • Activity: Make up a silly scenario with your child, like a dinosaur walking down the street or an ice cream thunderstorm. Put on a short play where you and your child each play the role of each other. How does your child think you would react to the silly scenario and why? How would you react if you were your child?

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time! It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process. For more information, call our student information registrar at 571-226-4400.

FCPS also offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage

💻 Try Online Registration

Parents may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process. When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account.

FCPS Ombuds Office Provides Confidential Guidance

The Office of the Ombuds engages with families, students, and staff to offer resources and improve the experience of each and every member of the FCPS community. They work as an independent confidential resource to help answer questions, offer options to resolve concerns, and hear complaints regarding FCPS matters. Anyone seeking assistance from the Office of the Ombuds may call 571-423-4014, text 571-496-8284, email ombuds@fcps.edu, or visit the ombuds webpage, where you may submit a question. Ombuds staff do not change or make decisions, policies, or regulations; take sides; or provide legal advice.

When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.

Gone are the days of digging through emails or hunting for bookmarks. The FCPS app provides a custom experience that is both powerful and easy to use. Here is how it makes life easier:

⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Throughout the winter we will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors once we are able to return to outdoor activities. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

While it is unlikely that we will have the opportunity to play outside next week, it is critical that all students come with the needed gear each day.

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.

Staying Safe, Supported, and Learning Through Winter Weather

We know this past week of winter weather and school closures has been challenging for many families, and we appreciate everyone’s flexibility and patience as our community has navigated the conditions safely.

If your family, or someone you know, needs support during this time, Fairfax County Public Schools provides access to resources that can assist with academic support, mental health services, and essentials such as food, clothing, housing, and other basic needs. Families are encouraged to visit the FCPS winter resources webpage to learn more about available assistance.

While we are excited to welcome students back soon, learning can still continue at home during unexpected closures. Snow and inclement weather days can offer opportunities to mix fun and learning through reading, games, creative projects, and everyday activities that keep students engaged and growing. For ideas, remember to check out these winter activities

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to keep our Pine Spring community safe, connected, and learning—no matter the weather.
