A Message from Ms. Kirkland
Dear Mount Eagle Families,
As we head into the weekend, I wish you a lovely and meaningful Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. This time gives us an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and the importance of kindness, service, and community.
As we return next week, please note that the quarter is winding down, and students will be participating in several important assessments. These assessments help our teachers understand student progress and plan next steps for learning.
A few important reminders for the coming weeks:
-
Early Release:
Wednesday, January 28 is a two-hour early release day, with student dismissal at 1:30 PM.
-
Student Holidays:
Thursday, January 29 and Friday, January 30 are student holidays, and there will be no school for students on those days. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, February 2.
Finally, thank you to our families for making every effort to ensure students are on time and present from January 26–28. Your partnership is essential as we complete important end-of-quarter learning and assessments.
We appreciate your continued support and wish you a restful weekend. As always, I'm grateful for our partnership.
Warmly,
Kate
Kate Kirkland, Principal

There’s a story behind the success of every FCPS student — a story about what’s possible with the appropriate funding for world-class teachers, rigorous academics, and future-ready learning experiences. At FCPS, student success starts with a strong budget!
FCPS is currently developing the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which is for the 2026-27 school year. In January, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will present a proposed budget to the School Board.
During this process, we’ll be sharing FCPS’ budget story with you. The different chapters will explain the impact of chronic underfunding, why strong funding benefits all of Fairfax County, what’s at stake when Fort Hunt and other FCPS schools don’t get the support we need, and more.
We invite you to follow along and learn how you can help write our next chapter!
Healthy Habits to Reduce the Spread of Flu and Other Germs
Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.
Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs.
Immunization Events for FCPS Students
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be available throughout the school year.
Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. View immunization resources on the FCPS website.
🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance
Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year. Our current absentee
As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.
Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
