I am writing to summarize the Superintendent’s recommendations for boundary changes to schools located in the Mount Vernon District or attended by Mount Vernon District residents, which includes the Edison HS, Hayfield HS, Lewis HS, Mount Vernon HS, South County HS, and West Potomac HS pyramids. You can also look up your address in the boundary scenario tool.

I am seeking your input on the recommended boundary changes.

  1. Speak at the School Boundaries Public Hearing at Luther Jackson MS on Saturday, January 10 at 10:00 AM. Registration has closed, but you can speak if you arrive before the start of the public hearing and register on-site with the Clerk. (Please note that you will have to wait until registered speakers have completed their testimony.)
  2. Speak at the Capital Improvement Program Public Hearing at Luther Jackson MS on Tuesday, January 13 at 6:00 PM. Registration closes on Friday, January 9 at 4:30 PM. Click here to register. If you miss the deadline, you can speak if you arrive before the start of the public hearing and register on-site with the Clerk. (Please note that you will have to wait until registered speakers have completed their testimony.)
  3. Participate in my Virtual Town Hall on Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 PM. Click here to register.

Recommended Changes – Mount Vernon District

Elementary Schools

  • Bucknell ES: No changes.
  • Belle View ES: No changes.
  • Cameron ES: No changes.
  • Fort Belvoir ES: The Superintendent recommends the reassignment of approximately 20 students living off-base from Fort Belvoir ES to Washington Mill ES, which would keep the students in the Mount Vernon HS pyramid. These students are located on Backlick Road, Belvoir Square, the Landings II Apartments, the Courts at Belvoir, and Shephard Lane. Capacity utilization at Washington Mill ES will increase from 81% to 84%, capacity utilization at Fort Belvoir Primary ES will decrease from 107% to 106%, and capacity utilization at Fort Belvoir Upper ES will decrease from 87% to 86%.
  • Fort Hunt ES: The Superintendent recommends the elimination of the attendance island and the reassignment of 107 students from Fort Hunt ES to Mount Vernon Woods ES, which will enable these students to attend their neighborhood school, facilitate biking and walking to school, promote greater parental involvement, and reduce chronic absenteeism. These students are located in Creekside Village. Capacity utilization at Mount Vernon Woods ES will increase from 80% to 96%, and capacity utilization at Fort Hunt ES will decrease from 80% to 64%.
  • Groveton ES: The Superintendent recommends the elimination of the attendance island and the reassignment of 58 students from Groveton ES to Hybla Valley ES, which will enable these students to attend their neighborhood school, promote greater parental involvement, and reduce chronic absenteeism. These students are located in Murraygate Village. Capacity utilization at Hybla Valley ES will increase from 90% to 96%, and capacity utilization at Groveton ES will decrease from 125% to 115% (excluding modulars).
  • Gunston ES: The Superintendent is planning to study potential changes to the boundaries for Gunston ES, Halley ES, Laurel Hill ES, and Lorton Station ES. By January 2027, the Superintendent will present her recommendations for boundary changes.
  • Halley ES: See above under “Gunston ES.”
  • Hollin Meadows ES: A single house on Douglas St. was moved from Hollin Meadows ES to Stratford Landing ES at the request of the resident, who lives in a cul-de-sac wherein surrounding homes attend Stratford Landing ES. Otherwise, no changes.
  • Hybla Valley ES: See above under “Groveton ES.”
  • Island Creek ES: No changes.
  • Laurel Hill ES: See above under “Gunston ES.”
  • Lorton Station ES: See above under “Gunston ES.”
  • Mount Eagle ES: No changes.
  • Mount Vernon Woods ES: See above under “Fort Hunt ES.”  
  • Newington Forest ES: No changes.
  • Riverside ES: To address overcrowding, the Superintendent recommends the reassignment of 76 students from Riverside ES to Woodlawn ES. These students are located at Pembrook Village, South Pinewood Apartments, Brevard Court, and Diablo Court. To ensure pyramid alignment and eliminate the split feeder, the Superintendent recommends the reassignment of 35 students from Riverside ES to Stratford Landing ES. These students are located on Napper Road, Brown Court, Shaw Park Court, Brosar Court, and Hunting Creek Townhouses. Capacity utilization at Woodlawn ES will increase from 71% to 83%, capacity utilization will increase at Stratford Landing ES from 79% to 83%, and capacity utilization at Riverside ES will decrease from 129% to 110% (excluding modulars). In addition, the Superintendent is planning to study the potential relocation of the AAP center from Riverside ES to Woodley Hills ES to reduce overcrowding.
  • Sangster ES: No changes.
  • Saratoga ES: To address overcrowding, the Superintendent recommends the reassignment of 48 students from Rolling Valley ES to Saratoga ES. These students are located on Hooes Road, Beechwood Drive, Rose Garden Lane, Camp David Drive, White House Drive, Barkers Court, Cyril Place, Rolling Oak Lane, Walnut Knoll Drive, Eggar Woods Lane, Stream Bluff Way, Spring View Court, De Arment Court, Spring Tree Drive, Rolling Road (south of Fairfax County Parkway), Bethelen Woods Lane, Erska Woods Court, Donegal Lane, Jiri Woods Court, Ballyshannon Court, and Mullingar Court. Capacity utilization will increase at Saratoga ES from 78% to 84%, and capacity utilization at Rolling Valley ES will decrease from 99% to 90%.
  • Silverbrook ES: No changes.
  • Stratford Landing ES: See above under “Riverside ES.”  
  • Washington Mill ES: See above under “Fort Belvoir ES.”  
  • Waynewood ES: No changes.
  • Woodlawn ES: See above under “Riverside ES.”
  • Woodley Hills ES: See above under “Riverside ES.”

Middle Schools

  • Key MS: No changes. Changes to the assigned middle school and high school for Bren Mar Park ES could impact Key MS.
  • Hayfield MS: See above under “Gunston ES.” These changes could impact Hayfield MS.
  • Sandburg MS: The changes to the Fort Hunt ES/Mount Vernon Woods ES boundaries will move 32 students from Sandburg MS to Whitman MS. Capacity utilization will increase at Whitman MS from 84% to 87%, and capacity utilization will decrease at Sandburg MS from 98% to 96%.
  • South County MS: See above under “Gunston ES.” These changes could impact South County MS.
  • Twain MS: No changes. The Superintendent is planning to study the assigned middle school and high school for Bren Mar Park ES in two years.  
  • Whitman MS: See above under “Sandburg MS.”

High Schools

  • Edison HS: No changes. The Superintendent is planning to study the assigned middle school and high school for Bren Mar Park ES in two years.  
  • Lewis HS: No changes. Changes to the assigned middle school and high school for Bren Mar Park ES could impact Lewis HS.
  • Hayfield HS: See above under “Gunston ES.” These changes could impact Hayfield HS.
  • Mount Vernon HS: The changes to the Fort Hunt ES/Mount Vernon Woods boundaries will cause 54 students to move from West Potomac HS to Mount Vernon HS. Capacity utilization will increase at Mount Vernon HS from 75% to 77%, and capacity utilization will decrease at West Potomac HS from 92% to 90%.
  • South County HS: See above under “Gunston ES.” These changes could impact Hayfield MS.
  • West Potomac HS: See above under “Mount Vernon HS.”
