Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope your winter break was restful and that our Cubbies enjoyed the break. It has been wonderful to welcome our Cubbies back this week and to see their excitement reuniting with peers and our staff.

We are excited to kick off 2026 with thrilling news about one of our teachers. Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Meghan Mason, one of our fourth grade teachers, who has been named the Outstanding Teacher for the Westfield Pyramid! This recognition is well-deserved and highlights her exceptional impact that she has on students, new teachers, and our school community through her many instructional leadership roles.

To start the year strong, we are hosting a C.A.R.E.S. Spirit Week from January 12th through January 16th. This will be a wonderful time to reinforce our school-wide expectations and celebrate the values that keep our learning environment positive and safe. We encourage you to talk with your children at home about these expectations as well; your partnership helps strengthen our school-home connection. Please see additional information below.

We hope the year ahead is filled with growth and happiness for every Cubbie and family. Let's commit to being brave in our learning and kind to one another. Together, let's make 2026 extraordinary!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Westfield Pyramid Kindness Shirts

Westfield Pyramid Schools are committed to promoting kindness, empathy, and inclusion. Cub Run will celebrate Kindness Week February 9-13, and we invite all students and staff in the Westfield Pyramid to wear their “We Choose Kindness” shirts signifying a personal commitment to choosing kindness. We are offering short-sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts in black with white and pink ink. Why pink? The color is based on an anti-bullying campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

Orders are due by January 14th and items will be delivered to your child’s classroom in early February. If you would like to purchase, please order online via the PTA Store, or return the order form that comes home in Wednesday folders on January 7th.

All orders and payments are due by Wednesday, January 14th (with any checks made out to Cub Run PTA). We will not be accepting any orders/payments after January 14th.

FCPS Math Week - January 12-16

FCPS invites you to experience a full week of family time with FREE stories, games and math activities - all from the comfort of your home.

Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 12.

Visit the Math Week website for games, stories, and other interactive activities for the whole family.

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Self-Control. Self-control means having the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.

Having self-control helps people stay calm during tough times and avoid impulsive actions. It doesn’t mean you don’t have thoughts or feelings; it means you can manage them.

When working or gathering in groups, self-control is shown through “self-monitoring.” This means being honest about what works and what doesn’t. Group members adjust their roles to help the group succeed.

To practice and encourage the character strength of self-control at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your continued support!

Reid Reflects: State Standards and the FCPS Budget Story

In her Weekly Reflections, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid thanked every member of our community for supporting FCPS as it remains fully accredited. Referencing a news release on accreditation, Dr. Reid noted how FCPS needs funding to support and maintain this excellence.

As we previously shared, Cub Run Elementary was recognized as being On Track.

Visit the Budget Story webpage to learn more about the FCPS budget and the funding challenges that schools across Virginia, not just FCPS, face because of outdated state funding formulas.Read more of Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections.

Make Your Voice Heard!

Look for opportunities to share your ideas about funding public education and encourage your neighbors, friends, and community members to follow the FCPS budget process. Several key decision dates and engagement opportunities are listed below:

  • Thursday, January 22, 2026 - Dr. Reid will present the proposed FCPS budget to the School Board.

Visit the FCPS budget webpage for more information.

Reminders

Attendance

Reporting Student Absences

We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Whenever your child is unable to attend school, please let us know. Reporting absences helps our staff support students and connect them with resources they may need.

Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by either method below:

Cub Run Attendance phone line: 703-633-7575

Cub Run Attendance mailbox: CubRunElem.Attendance@fcps.edu

Parents may monitor their child’s attendance records in SIS ParentVUE.

Attendance Codes in SIS ParentVUE Explained

Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.

When Your Child Is Sick

It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.

For instance, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.
