From the Principals’ Desk
Welcome back, Eagles! We hope you and your families had a restful and joyful winter break. It has been wonderful to see our students return with smiles, stories to share, and excitement about being back together as a learning community.
As we settle back into routines, we want to emphasize our continued focus on literacy. Reading skills are foundational to success across all subjects, and the partnership between school and home makes a powerful difference. Whether it’s reading together at bedtime, talking about a favorite book, or encouraging your child to read independently, those moments at home truly support the work happening in our classrooms. Thank you for being such important partners in helping our Eagles grow as confident readers.
We look forward to a strong start to 2026 and to all the learning ahead.
With appreciation,
April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

✨ Literacy Spotlight
What’s happened in Pre-K Reading and Writing?
FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark
Pre-K’s Quarterly Focus
Students will gain a sense of self within school and home.
This quarter, our Pre-K students are building strong early literacy skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Children are practicing comprehension and phonological awareness by enjoying stories, sharing ideas, recognizing sounds in words, and expressing themselves through drawings and early writing. These experiences help lay the foundation for confident communication, future reading, and a love of learning.

 Kindergarten Unit 4 Essential Question
Why do people tell stories?
In this unit, students read and compare stories written by several authors to explore different writing styles and purposes. Through characters and their adventures, students learn how stories can entertain, teach lessons, and show how families and friends care for one another.
➕ Math Spotlight
What’s happened in Kindergarten Math?
FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Student Centered Engagement
Kindergarten Unit 5 Focus for This Week:
In this unit, students are revisiting the numeracy skills introduced in Quarter 1. They are applying what they have learned about numbers and counting up to 30, with a special focus on exploring teen numbers. Students continue to practice and strengthen their understanding of number relationships by decomposing the number 5 and begin early exploration of how numbers can be broken apart to make 10. These activities help build a strong foundation for future math learning.

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Student Centered Engagement
 Pre-K Focus for This Week
Our Pre-K classes have been buzzing with excitement as students dive into fun, hands-on math learning during center time! The children have been practicing one-to-one correspondence and building number recognition skills for numbers one through ten, all while playing and exploring. They’ve also been busy creating colorful patterns and showing off their creativity. In addition, our young learners became little mathematicians by collecting data, conducting surveys, and turning their results into graphs. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity, confidence, and joy shine as they learn through play!
🏡 Community Corner
As we return from break, we want to share an important health reminder. Fairfax County is currently experiencing very high levels of flu and flu-like illness, particularly among children. To help reduce the spread of illness in our school community, families are encouraged to reinforce healthy habits at home, including:
- Frequent handwashing
- Covering coughs and sneezes
- Keeping students home when they are sick
- Practicing good hygiene and rest
These tips come from the Fairfax County Health Department and help keep our students and staff healthy and ready to learn. Thank you for your continued care and cooperation as we work together to support the well-being of our entire SEES community.
