Holiday - January 19, 2026

Martin Luther King, Jr. and National Day of Service

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (“MLK Day”), observed on the third Monday in January, is a day to honor and reflect upon the immense contributions of Dr. King to the civil rights movement. It is a time to remember his dream of equality, justice, and unity, and to engage in meaningful discussions about the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice in the United States and worldwide.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, encouraging all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. During the last two decades, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact is increasing as more Americans come to understand that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving their communities.
