A Message from Ms. Kirkland
Dear Families,
It has been wonderful welcoming students back to school and celebrating a successful first week back! Our classrooms are filled with positive energy, focused learning, and happy reunions, and I couldn’t be prouder of our students and staff for such a strong start. Thank you to our families for helping everyone return ready to learn.
As a quick reminder, although we have experienced some unseasonably warm temperatures, it is still winter. Please continue to send your children to school with warm coats and appropriate winter clothing, as outdoor recess and weather changes can happen quickly.
Please also note an important upcoming date:
Monday, January 19 – Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday There will be no school for students, and the school office will be closed in observance of the holiday.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to another great week ahead!
Warmly,
Kate
Kate Kirkland, Principal
Calendar Reminder

There’s a story behind the success of every FCPS student — a story about what’s possible with the appropriate funding for world-class teachers, rigorous academics, and future-ready learning experiences. At FCPS, student success starts with a strong budget!
FCPS is currently developing the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which is for the 2026-27 school year. In January, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will present a proposed budget to the School Board.
During this process, we’ll be sharing FCPS’ budget story with you. The different chapters will explain the impact of chronic underfunding, why strong funding benefits all of Fairfax County, what’s at stake when Fort Hunt and other FCPS schools don’t get the support we need, and more.
We invite you to follow along and learn how you can help write our next chapter!
The Family Academy offers resources and in-person and virtual classes, workshops, webinars, and programs for families. The following webinars and workshops will take place in January:
- Co-Parenting: Two Parents, Two Homes (in English and Spanish)
- The Connected Family: Navigating the Digital World Together
- Loving Solutions
- Parent Project
- Sibshops and SibTeens
There will also be Family Resource Center webinars on topics including planning for the future for special needs children, traumatic stress, developing motivation, and reducing parent stress and anxiety.
Visit the Family Academy Catalog to explore these and other resources.
Online Registration for SY26-27 Opened January 6
Online Registration (OLR) for the 2026–2027 school year opened on January 6, 2026. Both new and returning (re-enrolling) families can use OLR to register students in grades Kindergarten (00) through 12.
The 2026-27 Online Registration packet has two important new questions:
-
Pre-Kindergarten Experience (grades 1-6): About the student's Pre-Kindergarten background.
-
Early Release Wednesdays: About childcare plans for students in grades 00-06 during Early Release Wednesdays.
The immunization process has been simplified:
- Parents will only be asked to upload the immunization record or to check a box stating that a hard copy will be provided during the in-person registration appointment.
Please encourage newly enrolling families to visit the FCPS Online Registration site for more information. Families may still use the electronic bundle or paper registration forms if they prefer. The IT FASTeam will offer training for school staff on these new features throughout January.
🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance
Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year. Our current absentee
As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.
Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
