It's good to be back at Haycock and kicking off 2026 together!
Dear Haycock Families,
Happy New Year to all! The beginning of a new calendar year always gives us the opportunity to reflect and adjust things if needed. We are engaged in those sorts of reflections here at Haycock.
It was wonderful to see our students back in the building this morning. We hope all of you had a restful and wonderful winter break, and we are ready to get back to work and to learning. We are looking forward to a full week of doing both!
With appreciation for your partnership,
Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu
Heather Boyd, AP HABoyd@fcps.edu
Krystal Styles, AP krstyles@fcps.edu

🏫Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night- 1/14/26
Longfellow MS will be hosting a Curriculum Night for rising 7th grade students and their families on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This evening session aims to provide parents with information that will help their incoming 7th grade student with transition to middle school. Families will have the opportunity to explore elective course offerings and hear from a variety of Longfellow staff about the courses and programs offered to 7th grade students. Students and staff will also be available to answer questions.
If inclement weather occurs, the event will be rescheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Longfellow looks forward to welcoming you!
🧮ST Math Week 1/12 to 1/16
Come together as a community for students in K-8 for 5 nights the week of January 12, 2026, with delightful math games and stories - all on your own time and from the comfort of your own home. All content will be available for free directly to all families in English and Spanish.
All content will be available completely free on the website starting January 12, 2026. To access the games, families will be able to simply click on the day of the week and find their child's grade and language.
Families can play for as little as 15 minutes or replay over and over lasting more than an hour on any given night. For families that want to reduce screen time, we will have physical print options for access to the content and games as well.
Use the games and stories on our website or dust off your favorite math game and play it as a family.
Any and ALL math experiences outside of a normal week count. Our goal is for FCPS to experience 1,000,000 minutes of math outside of the school day. Join us!
🌃Dark Skies Presentation at Longfellow MS
The McLean HS and Longfellow Get2Green teams are studying light pollution and are offering this outreach event about that topic.
Event: Dark Skies Presentation & Astronomy Night
Date & Time: Thursday, January 15, 2026, 7:00-8:30 pm.
Where: Longfellow Lecture Hall & PE Field
Who: This event is open to the Haycock, Longfellow and McLean community as well as our greater community. Please invite your neighbors.
Description: Come learn how the natural world thrives in darkness. Students and guest speakers will discuss light pollution and ways to be better stewards of our night skies. After the presentations, a local astronomer will lead stargazing on the Longfellow PE field. Bring warm clothes (hats and mittens) for the outdoor portion. We'll have telescopes and binoculars available.
Also, the Smithsonian Natural History Museum has a special exhibit on this topic open through the end of December called “Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky,” on the second floor. The Smithsonian provides a virtual tour if you can’t go in person. https://naturalhistory.si.edu/exhibits/lights-out
💵Ways to Stay Informed- FCPS Budget
In her latest Weekly Reflections, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid thanked every member of our community for supporting FCPS as it remains fully accredited. Referencing a news release on accreditation, Dr. Reid noted how FCPS needs funding to support and maintain this excellence. As we shared before winter break, Haycock Elementary was recognized as being Distinguished, along outperforming all other elementary schools in Virginia's Region 4 in both Math and Reading mastery.
Visit the Budget Story webpage to learn more about the FCPS budget and the funding challenges that schools across Virginia, not just FCPS, face because of outdated state funding formulas. Read more of Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections.
🎤Make Your Voice Heard! - Look for opportunities to share your ideas about funding public education and encourage your neighbors, friends, and community members to follow the FCPS budget process. Several key decision dates and engagement opportunities
- Wednesday, January 7, 2026, beginning at 10 a.m. - There will be virtual regional public hearings on the governor’s proposed 2026-28 biennial state budget
- Thursday, January 22, 2026 - Dr. Reid will present the proposed FCPS budget to the School Board. Visit the FCPS budget webpage for more information.
