Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful break and returned rested and ready for the remainder of the school year. As we look toward the months ahead, I want to share a few quick reminders: Graduation is set for June 4, and the end of the second quarter is January 28.
While our seniors are focused on graduation, our other students are beginning to think about classes for the next school year. January is dedicated to learning about your options so that informed decision-making can begin in February.
To help families navigate these choices, I want to highlight three primary resources:
-
Academic Advising Website: This is updated regularly and contains comprehensive information on curriculum and requirements. Please check it frequently.
-
Curriculum Night: Join us next Thursday, January 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. This is an essential event where families can talk directly with teachers about courses.
-
FCPS Academies: These programs offer specialized career-centered courses located outside of our main building. I encourage you to visit the Academy website to view open house dates and use the "High School Academy Course Finder" to see which courses are available to Woodson students.
Students will also receive information during the school day through various events starting this week. This is a great time to revisit short- and long-term goals. Please look for a detailed e-Notify from Mr. Peters later this week for more specifics.
While we took time to rest over the break, our student activities remained busy! We have several incredible achievements to celebrate from our fall and winter seasons:
-
All-State Honors: Congratulations to Sophie Ferrell (2nd Team All-State, Girls Volleyball) and Isaac McConkie (1st Team All-State, Boys Volleyball). In Cross Country, Hadley Vanek and Keira Arenholz were both selected for 1st Team All-State.
-
Special Olympics Unity: Just before the break, we unveiled our Special Olympics Unified Champion School banner. This high honor recognizes our commitment to inclusive sports and meeting excellence criteria across the board. Thank you to our coaches, Megan Pitts, Ashley Neal, Eileen Reap and Angela Harrison, for their leadership.
-
Team Victories: Our Wrestling team won the Cavalier Classic, with individual championships for Leo Willis, Scott Cockrell, and Arsh Khushbin. Additionally, both Basketball teams won their holiday tournaments—the boys at the William Allen Tournament and the girls at the Boo Williams Tournament.
-
Record-Breaking Performance: Barrett Pullen broke a school shotput record held since 1983! With a throw of 61' 1.25", he is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation.
The next time you are in front of the building, please look at the wall to see our updated Honor Band years. It is inspiring to see the long tradition of excellence and musicianship at Woodson High School.
Welcome back! We are looking forward to a wonderful 2026.

🖥️New Parent Controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal
- FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
- These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
- For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Graduation Status Now Available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE
A new Graduation Status section is now available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. The Graduation Status is a tool that helps parents and students monitor and track their progress in meeting graduation requirements. This feature includes progress towards the Standard or Advanced Studies diploma for high school students and middle school students who have enrolled in one or more high school courses.
This new graduation status section is available in addition to the course history and unofficial transcript options in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. To view the graduation status section, please take the following steps:
- Login to your SIS ParentVUE Account
- Go to “Course History” for your middle or high school student
- Go to “Graduation Status” and toggle “on”
For your awareness, in some cases, the Graduation Status section may flag a graduation requirement as having not been met yet when in fact the student has met the requirement or is currently enrolled in a course that will fulfill the requirement. Please know that school counselors review graduation requirements yearly with students during academic advising and help ensure that all students are in classes they need to remain on track to graduate on time. Students will have the opportunity to review any questions or concerns about their graduation status in February/March when they meet with their counselor for academic advising.
For general questions about graduation requirements, please review the information from on the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. You are welcome to contact your child's school counselor at any time as well.
Additional information about ParentVUE is available HERE.

🙋♂️ Attendance Is Important Every Day!
Every year, absences increase in the weeks before and after winter break. Give your child the gift of education and help build a habit of attendance. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources.
Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility
If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:
-
Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.
-
Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.
To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.
The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.
Go Paperless!
Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
