Thu, Jan 22 - Multicultural Night

It's been such a fun week in the Forest!

  • Monday, our 5th & 6th Grade Band Students performed their Winter Concert. Thank you, Mr. Holscher, for preparing the students for a great concert.
  • Tuesday, students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd were treated to the annual South County High School Tiny Tots show. This is one of my favorite field trips each year and our kids love it!
  • Wednesday, Knights Clubs had another great meetup. I visited the Knitting, Dance, and Rubix Cubes clubs. I enjoyed watching the kids have fun while building community.
  • Thursday was SCA's Ugly Sweater Day. Lots of students and staff dressed in fun and ugly sweaters. Congratulations to the students who won Ugliest Sweater in their classes!

This week, the PTA treated our staff with catered breakfast on Tuesday, AND lunch on Thursday. The giftwrap drive was also a thoughtful idea. Thank you to the PTA Board and all of the parents who contributed. You brightened our week and we always appreciate your support.

As an FYI - our school's main office will be open from 9am-12pm on both Mondays and Tuesdays of winter break.

I hope our students and families have a fantastic Winter Break. See you in 2026!

Sincerely,

Angela Thompson
Principal

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Programs

Lottery Applications Begin January 12, 2026

All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language.

FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application begins on January 12 (8:30 a.m.). A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

VQB5 for Families

FCPS participates in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5). VQB5 is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of curriculum.

Refer to “VQB5 for Families English/Spanish” for more information.

Winter Break Literacy Adventures

This winter break, inspire your child to have a literacy adventure! These 10 fun family activities (each one focused on specific literacy skills) are designed to help students practice their reading, writing, and creative thinking. You can keep track of your literacy adventure by printing this page and crossing off each activity as your child completes it.

Reid Reflects: State Standards and the FCPS Budget Story

In her latest Weekly Reflections, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid thanked every member of our community for supporting FCPS as it remains fully accredited. Referencing a news release on accreditation, Dr. Reid noted how FCPS needs funding to support and maintain this excellence.

As we shared last week, Newington Forest Elementary was recognized as being On Track.

Visit the Budget Story webpage to learn more about the FCPS budget and the funding challenges that schools across Virginia, not just FCPS, face because of outdated state funding formulas.Read more of Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections.

Make Your Voice Heard!

Look for opportunities to share your ideas about funding public education and encourage your neighbors, friends, and community members to follow the FCPS budget process. Several key decision dates and engagement opportunities are listed below:

  • Thursday, December 18, 2025 - The Virginia Governor introduced the Fiscal Year 2026 state budget.
  • Wednesday, January 7, 2026, beginning at 10 a.m. - There will be virtual regional public hearings on the governor’s proposed 2026-28 biennial state budget.
  • Thursday, January 22, 2026 - Dr. Reid will present the proposed FCPS budget to the School Board.

Visit the FCPS budget webpage for more information.

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the good work of our Newington Forest staff members.
