Principal’s Message to Families

Dear Ravensworth Families,

This week at Ravensworth ES, several of our students and staff were invited to attend the FCPS Food Show at the Westfield Marriott where our students were asked to taste a multitude of food choices and give feedback to the FCPS Food Services Chefs and staff.  Our students provided valuable and thoughtful information which will be used for menu planning and recipe selections.

Our Ravensworth chorus showed off their talent and hard work during our school assemblies and our evening Chorus Concert.  Thank you, Ms. Dutko and Ms. Blend, for developing our students’ skills and love for music.  The concert was joyous and inspiring!   An additional shout out goes to our parent accompanist Ms. Streavig, and her son Beckley Gould for providing the beautiful piano accompany.

In Language Arts our students have been exploring how the government works, why it's important, and how laws change. You can connect your child’s learning with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What’s one rule at home or school you wish you could change and why?
  • Activity: Play a short game (like musical chairs or Simon Says) but change one rule. Discuss how rules help things run smoothly.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

We wish you all a wonderful weekend and stay warm!

️ Prepare for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Verify and update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.

FCPS encourages students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during winter break and snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play for your students during winter break or weather-related school closures.

Rising 7th Graders - Lake Braddock Middle School Curriculum Fair

The Lake Braddock Middle School Curriculum Fair will be held on Monday, December 15th, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. This event provides an opportunity for students and parents to visit and speak with staff to learn more about the school's various courses and curriculum offerings. Additionally, an optional Advanced Academic Program Information Session will take place prior to the main fair from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM in the Lecture Hall for those interested in the Advanced Academic Program.

Lake Braddock School Counselors will be meeting with each student to review their course selections after winter break. Course requests for the 26-27 school year will be available to see in SIS StudentVue and course request verification letters will be sent home in the late spring.

VDOE VQB5

FCPS participates in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5). VQB5 is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of curriculum. Refer to “VQB5 for Families English/Spanish” for more information.

Monitoring Support for Your Child in ParentVUE

All FCPS schools use an approach called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to make sure every student gets the help they need to learn.

MTSS helps school teams deliver high-quality instruction for all students and provide extra time, support, and interventions as needed. Families are partners in this process. We will share information about your child’s individual learning, needs, and progress.

You may view your child's intervention plans and progress in SIS ParentVUE. Expect progress to be updated quarterly, with report card due dates.

Family Spotlight Board

If your child has had a great personal/family moment lately, send Ms. Heiman (amheiman@fcps.edu) a photo and it will be displayed on the Family Spotlight bulletin board in the main hallway! Examples: family celebrated a holiday, cultural traditions, child rode their bike without training wheels, great soccer game, got a new pet, and more!
