 KPES Families,
This time of year is filled with magic, excitement and a wonderful sense of community spirit here at Kings Park. Last week our Kindergarten students made some gingerbread masterpieces and our 2nd graders enjoyed an inspiring field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. All of our students continue to work hard, learn new things and grow in countless ways.
As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 22, to Friday, January 2. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. FCPS has developed a Winter Break Literacy Adventures Calendar to support students in maintaining the reading, writing, and speaking skills they have built during the first half of the school year, should you be interested.
We wish you and your family a restful and joyful Winter Break and look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Monday, January 5, 2026, which is also our Hats Off to the New Year spirit day (see below for details). See the complete school year calendar.

Attendance Reminders
Reporting Student Absences
We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Any day that your child is unable to attend school, parents should report the absence. By reporting absences, families are partnering with our staff so that everyone can make sure students are supported and have access to resources.
Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by calling our school attendance line at 703-426-7070 or emailing kingsparkelemen.attendance@fcps.edu. School staff will call parents if students are absent and our school has not been notified in advance.
Parents can monitor their child’s attendance records in SIS ParentVUE.
Attendance Codes in SIS ParentVUE Explained
Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.
When Your Child Is Sick
It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.
For instance, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.
📚 Finishing Up Learning about Government and Citizenship In Language Arts 📚
Benchmark Unit 3 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about government and citizenship.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Why are rules important?
- Activity: Have your child make a poster for an imaginary election — what would they promise as a leader?
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
FCPS Math Week: January 12-16
FCPS Math Week is coming in January! During the week of Jan 12-16 families are invited to play math games, read math stories, and spend time with activities that support math learning across grade levels. All activities are free and are available in English and Spanish. More info coming soon!

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Care to Share program. Care To Share is a program that takes uneaten food from the cafeteria/SACC to Food For Others so that families can benefit from this food that would otherwise end up in a landfill. But we need drivers! Please see details in the Sign Up and let us know if you can help!
The KP/KG PTA Board wishes the community a wonderful holiday season. We are looking forward to an exciting calendar year ahead. Please reach out to board@kpkgpta.org if you are interested in volunteering or being involved in any way with the PTA.
