Dear Lake Anne Families,
We hope you have been enjoying our 15 Days of Cheer leading up to Winter Break as much as we have! Below is each day’s theme for next week, our last week of cheer—feel free to have your child/ren participate in any or all of the days.
With winter weather upon us, please remember to dress your children warmly for outdoor recess and arrival/dismissal. Hats, gloves, coats, and layers help our Dolphins stay comfortable and enjoy their time outside safely. We appreciate your support in making sure our Dolphins are prepared for the colder months.
As you know, regular school attendance is critical to a student’s success. Currently, our chronic absenteeism rate is 9.5%. Our goal is to stay below 10% all year. Attendance is taken daily through the last day of school, including tardies and early dismissals. Every day that we partner together to reduce chronic absenteeism, we provide all Dolphins with the environment to succeed. Let’s work together to stay below 10% for the remainder of this year!

This Wednesday, the 3rd- and 4th-grade dolphins participated in our first annual Walk In My Shoes Event. During this assembly, the students completed fun activities designed to build compassionate empathy for people who experience the world differently and to learn ways to be inclusive friends. They learned more about ADHD/Distractibility, Autism/Deciphering Emotions, Food Allergies, Multiple Language Learners, Communication and became Sensory Detectives.

We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Whenever your child is unable to attend school, please let us know. Reporting absences helps our staff support students and connect them with resources they may need.
Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by calling the front office or sending a talking points message to their teachers.

Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.
When Your Child Is Sick
It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.
For instance, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.

Langston Hughes Middle School is hosting their Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 14 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Parents/Caretakers and students are invited to attend. During this event you may tour our building, meet teachers, and learn about 2026-2027 course offerings and the course selection process. You may also review our Academic Advising website to learn more about the course selection process. Early bird sessions for special programs will begin at 5:25pm and cover the following topics: Advanced Academics, AVID, IB-MYP, Multilingual Learners, and Special Education. Parent/Community Volunteers for Composting with Students
Can you come to school during lunch time for 2 hours to help students collect food scraps to take to the courtyard composting bins? If you enjoy a few wiggly worms and enthusiastic students, this could be the most fun you have all day!

Stormwater Garden/ Pollinator Meadow
The “wild” space between the art classrooms and the preschool playground is an important ecological reserve. During the winter, the plants will die back, but it is important to avoid compacting the soil by walking through it. Community volunteers have recently weeded it. Please assure that all our Dolphins walk around the “meadow.” Thank you!

📚 Halfway Through Learning about Government and Citizenship in Language Arts 📚
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 3 in Language Arts! Students have explored how the government works, why it's important, and how laws change.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What’s one rule at home or school you wish you could change and why?
- Activity: Play a short game (like musical chairs or Simon Says) but change one rule. Discuss how rules help things run smoothly.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15
Parents and guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services must submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Miki Citron (AART) at mhcitron@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2025.
Each year, families can submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services any time from the first day of school through December 15. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of six trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services.

This delightful musical reimagines The Nutcracker from the perspective of Clara and the Rat Society living beneath her floorboards. It features Tchaikovsky’s music alongside original songs and tells the story of Gabi, one of the Rat King’s children, who sets off on an adventure that changes Christmas forever.

VQB5 is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. Capital Area Food Bank is committed to providing food for our neighbors in need, throughout the year and in unexpected moments of economic hardship.

To support federal employees and contractors affected by the government shutdown, the food bank is holding additional food distributions at locations throughout its partner network. These new food distributions will offer boxes of shelf-stable pantry items and fresh produce for the duration of the shutdown.
