Spirit Week

Winter Spirit Week-Monday, Flannel and cozy socks. Tuesday, Swinter, Wednesday Class colors: Freshman Green, Sophmores White, Juniors Blue, Seniors Red, Staff Silver and Gold, Thursday Ugly Sweater Day, Friday Pajama Day

Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Community,

First and foremost, a huge thank you to the PTSO for hosting last week’s wonderful Holiday Staff Appreciation Lunch. It was simply amazing and truly hit the spot! Thank you for all you do to support our staff and students—your efforts do not go unnoticed.

Speaking of food, I also want to extend our thanks to our dedicated student volunteers, Najat Mamun, Alex Molholm, Emma Patel, Liam Scott, Sophia Weinberg and Ali Yalahow, along with Gu Zhu, our Kitchen Manager who attended the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services Third Annual "Future of FCPS" Student Food Show on December 9th. These students provided invaluable feedback by taste-testing potential future cafeteria items in collaboration with FCPS Food Services. We've heard exciting reports of new dishes they tried, such as chicken fettuccine alfredo and lo mein!

This week, we are getting into the holiday spirit with many different festive outfits! Today was Flannel & Cozy Socks Day, but here is the schedule for the rest of the week:

    • Tuesday is Swinter - Combination of Summer & Winter clothes
    • Wednesday is Class Colors
      • Freshmen: Green
      • Sophomores: White
      • Juniors: Blue
      • Seniors: Red
      • Staff: Silver & Gold
  • Thursday is Ugly Sweater
  • Friday is Pajama

We are looking forward to seeing everyone participate and get into the spirit!

As I shared last week, the sensitivity on our Open Gate Weapons Detection System was increased. We observed longer lines this morning, and we have learned that the following items tend to set off the towers:

  • Small ring binders
  • Pencil pouches with zippers
  • Calculators
  • Water bottles

The expectation is that as we all learn to adjust to this new setting, the lines will speed up again. This specific information will also be sent directly to students today to help them modify how they pack their belongings. Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we implement this important safety measure.

We have a wonderful week of activities upcoming! Last week, our Orchestra and Band Concerts featured amazing guest artists: our very own Lynn Schauder guest-conducted the seasonal favorite "Sleigh Ride" at the Orchestra Concert, and Aaron Morgan’s wife, SFC Erin Morgan, performed Concertino for Flute by Cecile Chaminade, wowing the audience. Both performances can be heard on our Weekly Podcast as Extra Credit. We invite you to come out this week and hear several staff guest singers alongside our students, performing at the Chorus Concert on Tuesday evening!

As always, check out Woodsandsports.com for all sporting events this week, including our upcoming Wrestling CAV Classic this Saturday!

Everyone, I hope you and your families have a wonderful Winter Break and a Happy New Year!

Weekly Wrap Up

Holiday Help for Families

We are seeing an increase in the needs of our families this season. So we are reaching out to invite anyone who is interested to provide donations of lightly worn winter clothes such as jackets, sweaters, gloves, hats, scarves, and thermals. Every size is welcome! Every contribution helps, especially for some of our students who walk or bike to school and back home.

Donation boxes will be placed outside A139 and outside Student Services for anyone who prefers to donate anonymously.

We would greatly appreciate your support! We are also collecting donations for our food pantry and winter food bags. If you would like to donate, please email me at DMSilva@fcps.com , text me at 571-587-0399 or donate to our myschoolbucks account.

Donation boxes will be placed outside my office (A139) and outside Student Services for anyone who prefers to donate anonymously.

Later this season, we will also be hosting an event where parents can “shop” for winter clothing donations to help their families.

Woodson Sophomore Musician Gives Back to Community

Congratulations to Woodson orchestra member, sophomore Clive Song and his string quartet for entering the third year of community service! The Frost String Quartet performed for patients and staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital on December 6. They will continue to bring holiday cheer to Washington Veteran Medical Center Nursing Home and INOVA Schar Cancer Center later this month.

The journey of giving began in 2023 when Clive joined Sophia Wang (McLean '28), Joel Sohn (TJ '29) and Andrew Lam (TJ '29) to form the string quartet under the coaching of Frost string teacher, Mrs. Anne Patterson. Friends parted ways for different high schools. The passion for music and for uplifting others, however, bonded the young musicians together.

They expanded their repertoire and continued with practicing and community outreach. For three school years, they have performed at FCPS events and brought joy to memory care and cancer patients, elderly veterans and nursing home residents, turning their musical talent into impact on people's lives. Kudos to Clive's generosity and commitment!

🖥️New Parent Controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal

  • FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
  • These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
  • For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Student Services Information

Graduation Status Now Available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE

A new Graduation Status section is now available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. The Graduation Status is a tool that helps parents and students monitor and track their progress in meeting graduation requirements. This feature includes progress towards the Standard or Advanced Studies diploma for high school students and middle school students who have enrolled in one or more high school courses.

This new graduation status section is available in addition to the course history and unofficial transcript options in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. To view the graduation status section, please take the following steps:

  1. Login to your SIS ParentVUE Account
  2. Go to “Course History” for your middle or high school student
  3. Go to “Graduation Status” and toggle “on”

For your awareness, in some cases, the Graduation Status section may flag a graduation requirement as having not been met yet when in fact the student has met the requirement or is currently enrolled in a course that will fulfill the requirement. Please know that school counselors review graduation requirements yearly with students during academic advising and help ensure that all students are in classes they need to remain on track to graduate on time. Students will have the opportunity to review any questions or concerns about their graduation status in February/March when they meet with their counselor for academic advising.

For general questions about graduation requirements, please review the information from on the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. You are welcome to contact your child's school counselor at any time as well.

Additional information about ParentVUE is available HERE.

🙋‍♂️ Attendance Is Important Every Day!

Every year, absences increase in the weeks before and after winter break. Give your child the gift of education and help build a habit of attendance. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
