Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

Though the weather outside may still be a bit chilly, we are keeping the vibes warm and vibrant inside at Little Run!

This week was packed with fun and learning. Earlier this week, our 4th and 5th graders had a fantastic opportunity to participate in the Woodson Math Honor Society after-school club. They engaged in a number of fun and challenging math-related activities that sparked curiosity and collaboration.

We were also thrilled to celebrate the incredible musical talents of our 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade Band and Strings students this week with an amazing winter concert! It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase their hard work and dedication.

As we head into our final week before a well-deserved winter break, we encourage all students to join in the fun with our upcoming SCA Spirit Week

We are grateful for your continued partnership and support in making Little Run a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal
Alison Butler, Assistant Principal

🧣 Getting Ready for Outdoor Recess

This is a reminder that students spend 30 minutes outdoors during recess each day. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, gloves, and a hat, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

Throughout the winter, FCPS and the Little Run administration monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories, and weather warnings which may prevent children from being outside and call for us to shorten the time outside for recess.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Family Liaison, Maria Ruiz (miruiz@fcps.edu) is happy to support you.

Attendance Matters!

Reporting Student Absences

We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Whenever your child is unable to attend school, please let us know. Reporting absences helps our staff support students and connect them with resources they may need.

Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by [add any other method of reporting absences at your school].

Parents may monitor their child’s attendance records in SIS ParentVUE.

Attendance Codes in SIS ParentVUE Explained

Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.

When Your Child Is Sick

It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.

For instance, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.

Winter Break Literacy Adventures

Engaging in literacy activities over winter break helps students maintain the reading, writing, and speaking skills they built during the first half of the school year. Even a little daily practice, such as these 10 fun family activities, helps ensure they return to school confident and ready to continue growing in literacy. Enjoy these literacy adventures as a family!

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during the upcoming winter break and on snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.
