Haycock Elementary Family Liaison Newsletter

From Your Family Liaison: Kathryn Dunbar

Welcome back to school! I hope your family had some down time to just hang out with each other. As you likely are aware, Monday, January 19, is not a school day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Consider making this day one of service: "Make it a day on, not a day off!"

Volunteer opportunities abound! In Fairfax County, Volunteer Fairfax is organizing a major event at NVCC Annandale. More information may be found here: MLK 2026.  Additionally, Fairfax County Parks will host activities at Frying Pan Farm Park (2709 West Ox Road, Herndon, VA, 20171), with opportunities for families and all ages to serve local nonprofits. To register, visit Frying Pan Park MLK Service Learning Day.

Get2Green

Learn @ Light Pollution as a Family...

at the Dark Skies Presentation & Astronomy Night held by the McLean pyramid Get2Green teams

Thursday, January 15, 2026, 7:00-8:30 pm.
Longfellow Lecture Hall & PE Field

Come learn how the natural world thrives in darkness. Students and guest speakers will discuss light pollution and ways to be better stewards of our night skies.  After the presentations, a local astronomer will lead stargazing on the Longfellow PE field with telescopes and binoculars available (or bring your own!)

Dress warmly for the outdoor portion!

This event is open to the Haycock, Longfellow and McLean community as well as our greater community. Please invite your neighbors.

   MORNING ROUTINE REMINDER

As Haycock welcomes students back from winter break this week, please remember that our school day begins at 9:20am. Students need to be in class by then so as not to miss announcements or assignments. We understand that mornings can be hectic, but provide this reminder because consistent, on-time attendance is a key ingredient for academic success and building good habits!

A quick refresher on Haycock's morning routine:

  • Door Opening Time: Doors open at 9:05am (news team members & safety patrols may enter at 9am). Students who eat school breakfast should head straight to the cafeteria!
  • Late Arrivals: All students arriving after 9.20am when the doors lock must sign in at the front office to ensure their attendance is recorded for the day.

Thank you once again for your dedication to your student's education and for helping us maintain a safe, welcoming, and punctual environment.

Happy 2026!
