Cold Weather Guidance

cold

This is a reminder that students spend 30 minutes outdoors during recess each day. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, gloves, and a hat, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

Throughout the winter, FCPS and the Providence principals monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories, and weather warnings which may prevent children from being outside and call for us to shorten the time outside for recess.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Family Liaison, Piedad Dwyer (pdwyer@fcps.edu) is happy to support you.

News from the Clinic

Outstanding FCPS Employee Awards

Each year in FCPS, schools identify and nominate outstanding leaders within their buildings to acknowledge them for their hard work and dedication to students. It is our honor to announce the award recipients for excellence in Fairfax County Public Schools, where we recognize the 2025–2026 employees for their outstanding achievements in education. Each honoree was nominated by a staff member or community member and carefully selected by our committee for their exceptional dedication, innovation, and positive impact on students. This award highlights those who exemplify the highest standards of educational excellence, and we are proud to celebrate their remarkable contributions to our schools.

  • Outstanding New Teacher award, the committee has selected Ms. Young in fourth grade.
  • Outstanding Teacher Aaward, the committee has selected Ms. Mayrides, our librarian.
  • Outstanding Professional Employee award, the committee has selected Ms. Rodriguez, the special education department chair.

The History and Humanities Fair - February 26

historyfair

The History and Humanities Fair is happening on February 26, 2026 at the Stacy C. Sherwood Center. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of GMU, this year PES students in grades 3-6 will join students from Daniels Run and Katherine Johnson for an expanded event.

What is the History and Humanities Fair?: Students choose their own topic and do their own research, alone or in teams. They then present their subject at the fair through exhibits, performances, or documentaries. It's like a science fair, but for history and humanities!

Optional study sessions will be held on Thursdays at Katherine Johnson Middle School in January and February to help students prepare.

For more information and to sign-up, use this link. The deadline to register is Friday, January 9! If you have questions, contact: catherinepfoster@gmail.com
