Happy Friday Newington Forest Families!

I want to share again the news of Newington Forest being recognized as On Track under Virginia’s new School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). This rating, based on data from last school year, shows that our school is meeting or exceeding expectations set by the state around student performance. This new framework places a greater emphasis on standardized test results, alongside student growth, graduation, and readiness measures that vary by school level. Our strong performance stands out and is something to celebrate.

This week, our 5th & 6th Grade Chorus put on a beautiful Winter Concert. It was such a pleasure to watch. Thank you to Mrs. Gordon & Mx. Bosley for preparing our Chorus singers for this performance.

A few reminders for next week:

  • Monday is the NFES Band Winter Concert
  • Wednesday is our next 3-hour Early Release. Dismissal will begin at 12:35pm.
  • SCA Spirit Week - the SCA has organized a fun week for students, including an Ugly Sweater Contest!
  • If your child will be absent, due to sickness or travel, please be sure to report the absence to the school.

I hope you have a restful weekend.

Sincerely,

Angela Thompson
Principal

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) for

School Year 2026-2027

All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language. English Language Arts and Social Studies are taught in English. Math, Science, Health, and Target Language Arts are taught in another language.

FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application begins on January 12 (8:30 a.m.). A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

To learn more about this program, or to attend an Informational Meeting, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/registration/dual-language-immersion-programs-registration

Winter Break Literacy Adventures

Engaging in literacy activities over winter break helps students maintain the reading, writing, and speaking skills they built during the first half of the school year. Even a little daily practice, such as these 10 fun family activities, helps ensure they return to school confident and ready to continue growing in literacy. Enjoy these literacy adventures as a family!

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the good work of our Newington Forest staff members.
