Principal's Message

Hello, Scottie families!

What a fun week of learning and celebrating at Bonnie Brae!  On Wednesday we had our 5th & 6th grade band and chorus performances for students during the day, and for family and friends in the evening.  The concerts showcased the many talents of our Scotties, and we are grateful for the support of our staff and families for instilling a love of the fine arts (and of learning!) in our students.

A reminder that our next Early Release Wednesday is December 17, and we will dismiss at 12:15 PM.  Any changes to your child’s Early Release Wednesday plan were due last week.  Be sure to check in with the main office or your child’s teacher if you have any questions about Wednesday’s dismissal procedures.

We are looking forward to continuing the fun, learning, and community building next week, as we finish 2025 with grade level parties on Thursday and Friday.  Finally, before we head into winter break we have our December SCA Spirit Day on Friday - Pajamas and Plushies!  Wear those cozy pajamas, bring a favorite plushy (no larger than a backpack), or wear Bonnie Brae colors of blue and white.

Enjoy the weekend and the time with family and friends.  Stay warm!

Safe Routes to School - Crossing Guard

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), in coordination with the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), is now working with an independent crossing guard service. As this partnership is still in its early stages, not all crossings in the county are currently staffed by the new service, and many continue to be covered by police officers. There may be occasions when police officers are unable to staff a crossing due to call volume or other urgent responsibilities. Please know that your children’s safety remains our highest priority.  School staff at arrival and dismissal duty are monitoring for a crossing guard, but if parents and caregivers notice that a crossing guard or police officer is not present at Sideburn Road, please notify the school as soon as possible by calling 703-321-3900, and office staff can notify FCPD of the need for a crossing guard. As a reminder, please ensure that you and your children use only marked crosswalks when crossing the street. Doing so helps keep everyone safe and reinforces good safety habits for the future.

Holiday Support Program

As the holidays approach, some of our school families are facing significant hardships.  We have a unique opportunity to come together as a community and provide much-needed support and cheer during this time.  We are organizing a Holiday Support Program to provide gift cards and essential items to families in need.  Your voluntary contribution can make a significant impact and help brighten the season for our students and their families.

If you would like to donate a gift card to our Holiday Support Program, please purchase a gift card and include the amount on the gift card. There will be a gift card collection box in our front office. All gift cards should be turned in to the front office by December 15.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity!

Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15

Please note the Bonnie Brae/FCPS deadline for Full Time AAP Referrals and optional referral documents (Grades 2-6) is Monday, December 15, 2025 (earlier is preferred), unfortunately, no exceptions can be made to this timeline. To learn more about the referral process, please visit the Full Time Services link  on the Advanced Academics Identification and Placement for Current FCPS Students webpage. Referral documents and follow up questions should be submitted to our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Larissa Sheehan, ltsheehan@fcps.edu. Thank you for your support!

Each year, families can submit a referral for full-time AAP services any time from the first day of school through December 15. No late referrals for full-time AAP services will be accepted.

Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of six trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services.

Next Steps for Parents

Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of their child’s materials after February 20, 2026, by emailing Larissa Sheehan, ltsheehan@fcps.edu.

At the elementary level, referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened by the school. If you miss the full-time referral deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific or part-time AAP services for the remainder of the year.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs webpage.

Reporting Student Absences

We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Any day that your child is unable to attend school, parents should report the absence. By reporting absences, families are partnering with our staff so that everyone can make sure students are supported and have access to resources.

Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by calling our school attendance line at (703) 321-3939 or emailing BonnieBraeElem.Attendance@fcps.edu. School staff will call parents if students are absent, and our school has not been notified in advance.

Parents can monitor their child’s attendance records in SIS ParentVUE.

Attendance Codes in SIS ParentVUE Explained

Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.

When Your Child Is Sick

It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.

For instance, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.

Winter Break Literacy Adventures

Engaging in literacy activities over winter break helps students maintain the reading, writing, and speaking skills they built during the first half of the school year. Even a little daily practice, such as these 10 fun family activities, helps ensure they return to school confident and ready to continue growing in literacy. Enjoy these literacy adventures as a family!

Holiday Lights Recycling

Holiday Lights Recycling

Our Bonnie Brae Get2Green program is excited to collect old and broken holiday lights so they can be recycled!  Bring in your old lights and drop them off in the collection bins at doors 2 and 5.  We are collecting holiday lights from December 1- January 9.

Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)

FCPS participates in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5). VQB5 is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of curriculum. Refer to “VQB5 for Families English/Spanish” for more information.

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during the upcoming winter break and on snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.
