Dear Dranesville Families:

I love this time of year. December school and community events are full of holiday spirit like these upcoming Dranesville events- school music concerts, McLean HS’s Highlander Holiday Bazaar, and Herndon’s Wintermarkt, to name a few. Please remember learning happens every day, and attendance remains important this time of year.

This has been a difficult year and fall for many in our community.

  • If you or your family needs help, find FCPS and FC resources listed below.
    • There are multiple ways to access mental health support including your student’s student services team, Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, and George Mason University counseling, guidance, and resources, more details below.
  • If you are able to help others, the county’s Holiday Gift Giving Guide and Educate Fairfax's 25 for 2025 Giving Challenge provide ways to donate basics, toys, clothing, or gift cards for our neighbors in need.
  • If you would rather donate your time, visit Volunteer Fairfax to find ways you, your student, and your family can help.

Cold weather has arrived, and we’ve already had our first 2-hour delay of the school year. You can see how FCPS responds to inclement weather and where to find the schedule status of FCPS. Students have recess in the colder weather, so please remember to dress them appropriately and then look for their winter clothing in your school’s lost and found. You can learn more about cold weather information and resources at Fairfax County’s winter weather webpage.

January and February will be busy with discussions and votes on boundary work, CIP, and budget. The early months of 2026 are full of work that will affect our students, families, and staff. Please share your advocacy with me, our At-Large members, the Board of Supervisors, and our Virginian elected officials. I will share updates throughout the winter in my newsletter.

I am honored to represent the Dranesville community and appreciate your advocacy on how to best serve our students and community as we work together to make FCPS the best school district.

Wishing you the best this holiday season and enjoy the winter break,

Robyn

Academic Matters: Standards of Learning (SOL) cut score impacts and proposed accountability revisions- In November, the Virginia Board of Education decided that cut score changes would begin in the 2026-27 school year (no changes for 2025-26) and phase in over four years, with an increased bar to pass each year. The new temporary “Approaching” level would count as pass/proficient during the phase-in so students and schools aren’t penalized right away. Using spring 2025 SOL results as a baseline, the new standards would significantly lower pass rates — for example, reading could drop from 79% to 51% and  math pass rate estimates could drop from 78% under current standards to 52% under full implementation.

Help Us Write Our Dranesville's Schools Next Chapter: Fiscal Year 2027 Budget

There’s a story behind the success of every FCPS student — a story about what’s possible with the appropriate funding for world-class teachers, rigorous academics, and future-ready learning experiences. At FCPS, student success starts with a strong budget!  FCPS is currently developing the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which is for the 2026-27 school year. In January, Superintendent Reid will present a proposed budget to the School Board.

During this process, we’ll be sharing FCPS’ budget story with you. The different chapters will explain the impact of chronic underfunding, why strong funding benefits all of Fairfax County, what’s at stake when FCPS schools don’t get the support we need, and more. Analysis: Fairfax County Gets Roughly 50 Cents Back for Every Dollar It Sends Commonwealth

Fairfax County leaders reviewed the findings of a new Revenues and Returns analysis during a meeting of the Board of Supervisors Economic Initiatives Committee on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The analysis, prepared by the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, provides an updated look at how much state General Fund revenue is generated from Fairfax County and how much state General Fund support comes back to the county through direct and indirect appropriations.

According to the analysis, Fairfax County generated approximately $5.77 billion in state General Fund revenue in FY 2024 — 20.7% of all state General Fund revenue, driven largely by individual income taxes. In the same year, the county received an estimated $2.93 billion in state General Fund appropriations, or 11.1% of total state General Fund spending. For every $1 contributed to the commonwealth, Fairfax received about $0.50 in support.

2025 Weldon Cooper report chart sharing Fairfax County receives 50 cent for each dollar given to VA

According to the Weldon Cooper analysis, “Fairfax’s situation is not unique” in northern Virginia, but “Fairfax’s sheer scale makes the gap the most consequential in terms of dollars.”

Highlights:

  • Fairfax County received about 50 cents for every dollar it contributed to the commonwealth in FY 2024.
  • The county generated $5.77 billion in state revenue — more than 20% of Virginia’s General Fund.
  • Despite representing 13% of Virginia’s population, Fairfax contributes more than the next three largest localities combined.

Northern Virginia contributes far more to the state than it receives in return. As a key driver of the Commonwealth’s revenue, the region’s contributions shape the state’s financial landscape; without them, Virginia’s budget would look very different. While the region produces over 30% of state General Fund revenue, the appropriations returned to support the area account for only about 15% of total statewide spending. This imbalance makes it more challenging to maintain services, balance budgets, and keep the region affordable for residents.

FCPS Updates

Dr. Monika Guerrero Vereb Named New Herndon ES Principal

Dr. Monika Guerrero Vereb Reception

Dr. Monika Guerrero Vereb with Dr. Jameile Choice, Region Assistant Superintendent for Region 1.

We are excited to share that Dr. Monika Guerrero Vereb has been named the new principal of Herndon Elementary School. Dr. Vereb comes to us with more than 15 years of experience in Fairfax County Public Schools and Loudoun County Public Schools. She is known for her dedication to strong relationships, academic growth, and building inclusive school communities. She brings a proven focus on early intervention, equity, and supporting the whole child. Her experiences and leadership will be a tremendous asset to Herndon Elementary students, staff, and families.

During her tenure at Herndon Middle School, Dr. Vereb demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence and equity, including:

  • Academic Excellence: Achieved exceptional equity growth in Math SOL proficiency for specialized groups (2022-2025) and successfully led the school out of Federal Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) designation.
  • Equitable Access: Elevated 8th-grade Algebra 1 enrollment from 53% to 88.4% and guided the school's journey to becoming an ISTE Lighthouse School.
  • Culture & Well-being: Significantly reduced chronic absenteeism by 14 percentage points and secured the school's first-ever distinction as a Designated Purple Star School, recognizing its commitment to supporting military families.

She currently serves as President of the FCPS Middle School Principals’ Association and holds a Doctor of Education degree from The College of William & Mary. She is also a two-time finalist (2023 and 2024) for the FCPS Outstanding New Principal award.

Showcasing Success in Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework

FCPS is proud to share that the majority of FCPS schools have been rated “distinguished” or “on track” in the first year of Virginia’s new School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). All FCPS schools remain fully accredited, even as the state shifts to this new model, which offers less flexibility for measuring student growth.

These strong results reflect the dedication of our excellent staff, the hard work of our students, and the ongoing support of our families, all of whom contribute to the success of our school communities.

Read the full news release on our schools’ performance.

Virginia’s Measures of Academic Performance and Success

In the Academic Matters portion of last Thursday’s School Board meeting, Dr. Reid discussed the impacts of the Standards of Learning (SOL) cut score and proposed school performance revisions. Read Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections for more information.

Changes to FCPS Student Art Recognition

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, FCPS will launch ARTiFAX, Art Recognition for Teens in Fairfax County Public Schools, a new county-level exhibition and awards program to celebrate our talented student artists. This program will replace FCPS's role as a regional affiliate for the Scholastic Art Awards. This decision follows a thorough review and extensive efforts by the Fine Arts Office to align with FCPS vendor criteria, particularly regarding student privacy and security. Despite valuing the Scholastic Awards, we could not reconcile differing operational approaches.

Students can still participate in the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. All U.S. students aged 13 through graduating seniors are eligible to submit their original works, and in the absence of a regional affiliate, submissions are automatically adjudicated in a “region-at-large.” For any questions or concerns, please contact Fine Arts Senior Manager Aaron Stratten (acstratten@fcps.edu) or Art Educational Specialist Susan Silva (sisilva@fcps.edu).

Support Our Schools: 25 for 2025 Giving Challenge

Join Educate Fairfax’s 25 for 2025 Giving Challenge and help ensure every FCPS student has the tools, support, and inspiration to succeed. Every gift, whether you can give $25 or $2,500, helps students learn while supporting the teachers and staff who make a lasting difference.

Last year, they contributed $1.27 million back into our schools. The foundation supplied more than 5,000 school supply kits to more than 61 schools, centers, shelters, and Welcome Centers. Its Food for All Campaign packed more than 1,000 snack packs and helped feed more than 350 families over Thanksgiving. Read the Educate Fairfax Annual Report to learn more about their impact.

Community Updates

Lock & Talk: Medication and Firearm Storage

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) is offering free locking medication boxes, trigger locks for firearms, and drug disposal kits, as part of the regional Lock and Talk Northern Virginia program, available at several pickup locations. Created by the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Northern Virginia (SPAN), this initiative aims to prevent suicides by promoting safe storage practices and encouraging open conversations about mental wellness. Studies show that limiting access to firearms and medications during a crisis can significantly reduce the risk of suicide and accidental overdoses.
