Tiny Tots at Woodson

Woodson hosted our annual Tiny Tots Performance

Message from Mr. Greata

The morning snowfall last Friday was a beautiful start to the winter season! Fortunately, the weather held off just enough that we were able to hold our many student activities over the weekend.

The Red Jenkins Basketball Tournament was as exciting as ever, including a nail-biter of a game that went into double overtime on Saturday night. Our teams played admirably all weekend, and it looks like we will have an excellent basketball season for both the girls' and boys' teams.

A big congratulations goes out to our Wrestling Team! They took third place overall out of over 50 teams at the Henrico Westling Tournament - The Annual Warrior Stampede. Great job! As always, check out woodsonsports.com for all athletic events.

Our Theater Department also performed their one-act play, A Piece of My Heart, this weekend. This was in preparation for the VHSL competition on January 30th (time to be determined). From what we saw, I'm sure they are going to do very well!

Last week, we celebrated all of our staff nominees for the Outstanding Employee Award. I want to thank all of the staff, families, and students who took the time to nominate a staff member for this award and let them know they are doing a great job.

We are proud to announce our schoolwide winners, who will now go on to compete at the pyramid level:

  • Outstanding Teacher: Martin Terrazas
  • Outstanding New Teacher: Jessica Dixon
  • Outstanding School-Based Professional Employee: Richard “Rick” Mey
  • Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee: Debora “Debbie” Glover
  • Outstanding School-Based Leader: Blair Smith

Helen Landers and her guitar students gave a wonderful performance last week to kick off the winter concert season and we have a busy week ahead with both Orchestra and Band concerts on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. We hope to see you there and check out the Woodson Weekly Podcast for sounds from our Band’s Tiny Tots Concert!

Next week is our Winter Spirit Week, and the themes are being voted on as we speak! We look forward to the reveal and a huge amount of school spirit. Our staff is getting into the spirit by competing in a Penguin Game! Small penguins are distributed, and you must "give it up" to anyone that asks you if you're holding one. The last one holding a penguin when the game ends will win a prize!

Hope you stay warm and have a wonderful week!

Weekly Wrap Up

🖥️New Parent Controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal

  • FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
  • These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
  • For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Student Services Information

Graduation Status Now Available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE

A new Graduation Status section is now available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. The Graduation Status is a tool that helps parents and students monitor and track their progress in meeting graduation requirements. This feature includes progress towards the Standard or Advanced Studies diploma for high school students and middle school students who have enrolled in one or more high school courses.

This new graduation status section is available in addition to the course history and unofficial transcript options in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. To view the graduation status section, please take the following steps:

  1. Login to your SIS ParentVUE Account
  2. Go to “Course History” for your middle or high school student
  3. Go to “Graduation Status” and toggle “on”

For your awareness, in some cases, the Graduation Status section may flag a graduation requirement as having not been met yet when in fact the student has met the requirement or is currently enrolled in a course that will fulfill the requirement. Please know that school counselors review graduation requirements yearly with students during academic advising and help ensure that all students are in classes they need to remain on track to graduate on time. Students will have the opportunity to review any questions or concerns about their graduation status in February/March when they meet with their counselor for academic advising.

For general questions about graduation requirements, please review the information from on the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. You are welcome to contact your child's school counselor at any time as well.

Additional information about ParentVUE is available HERE.

Curriculum Night

  • Date – Thursday, January 15th, 2026
  • Time – 6:00pm-8:00pm (Rising 9th Grade Presentation from 6:00-7:00pm in the Auditorium)
  • Location – Woodson HS Auditorium and both Cafeterias

Curriculum Night is an opportunity to meet with teachers from every academic department to learn more about course offerings available for students to take next year. Tables will be set up for each department in both of our cafeterias for families to walk around and visit at their own pace and ask questions of teachers available at each table. Both cafeterias will be open for families to visit tables from 6:00-8:00pm. Rising 9th grade families are strongly encouraged to join us in the Auditorium at 6:00pm for a presentation where additional detailed information will be shared with families to help fully inform students ahead of course selection.

Explore CTE and Academy/Specialty Programs

As academic advising season approaches, families are encouraged to explore the many pathways available for rising and current high school students.

Learn more about FCPS academies, specialized programs, and high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses at the Pathway Fair on Wednesday, December 10, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the cafeteria at Robinson Secondary School.

FCPS central office leaders and academy counselors will share insights about CTE programs, pathways, and opportunities across the school division.

Find additional information, including dates for academy open houses. Contact Bonnie Wannett with questions.

🙋‍♂️ Attendance Is Important Every Day!

Every year, absences increase in the weeks before and after winter break. Give your child the gift of education and help build a habit of attendance. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
