Haycock Elementary Family Liaison Newsletter

From Your Family Liaison: Kathryn Dunbar

With the winter break fast approaching, keep in mind that "brain drain" is not just a summer phenomena! Even a two-week school break, contributes to "brain drain" causing measurable learning loss in math and reading! Students can lose academic momentum and forget material, forcing teachers to spend weeks reteaching!

                                          What's a Parent to do?

  • Keep it Fun: Integrate learning into everyday activities like cooking!
  • Read Daily: Reading books and even magazines helps maintain reading skills!
  • Play Games: Board games and puzzles reinforce math and critical thinking.
  • Build Skills: Engage in activities that build independence, like planning outings, to boost executive function!

Speaking of Brain Boosting Activity...

Have you heard of the Icelandic tradition of JOLABOKAFLOD? Translated to "Christmas Book Flood", this tradition is where books are exchanged as gifts on Christmas Eve and spent reading them while drinking hot chocolate! Not a bad way avoid holiday brain drain!

Good thing Haycock's Book Fair

is this week!
