A Note From Principal Seward
Dear South Lakes High School Community,
I hope you enjoyed a restful, joyful, and well-deserved Thanksgiving Break. This season always invites us to pause, savor meaningful moments with loved ones, and reflect on the many blessings that enrich our lives. I was grateful for the opportunity to slow down, enjoy good food, and appreciate the spirit of gratitude that anchors us this time of year.
Thanksgiving weekend, of course, also brings its share of football traditions, rivalry matchups, and friendly competition. As I watched the big games, I was reminded of what I value most about athletics and activities: the unwavering commitment, passion, and pride that students, coaches, directors, and sponsors invest in representing their school. We see that same spirit here at South Lakes every single day.
Thank you to our student-athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, school administrators, and our ever-faithful Seahawk fans for your dedication that lifted our Fall athletic season and created lasting experiences for our students. As we begin the Winter Athletics season this week, I encourage you to continue showing your support. Together, we help create the meaningful, transformative moments that define a student’s high school experience.
Our Performing Arts Department is also preparing a robust and inspiring lineup of winter concerts and events, including orchestra, chorus, theatre, band, and more. These performances showcase the extraordinary talent, creativity, and collaboration of our students. I warmly invite you to join us for these celebrations of the arts and witness firsthand the brilliance of our Seahawks.
Lastly, tomorrow marks Giving Tuesday, the formal beginning of the holiday giving season. As we reflect on gratitude, service, and community, I ask you to consider supporting the many organizations and charities that provide essential assistance to students and families in Reston. This time of year, often highlights the needs faced by our neighbors. Your generosity strengthens our school community and ensures that no family stands alone.
With Gratitude,
Carlos D. Seward, Principal
With gratitude,
Carlos Seward
We value your feedback. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.

Weather Closings
❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.

 #AttendanceMatters
We have 3 weeks until winter break. We are maximizing the full weeks of learning to close out 2025! To support our #AttendanceMatters initiative, we need your partnership by committing to the following:
- Please be sure to make any necessary appointments for your students outside of school hours to maximize the learning time during the day.
- If your child is sick, please contact the school to let us know. Our attendance line is 703-715-4545 and our attendance email is SouthLakesHigh.Attendance@fcps.edu.
- As you check ParentVue and you note that they might need additional academic supports to bring up their grades and their attendance, please have them attend ASAAP on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursdays.
- Celebrate their accomplishments with them…whether it’s completing a retake, getting assignments turned in on time, or having 0 tardies! Every attempt matters!

Lightspeed Parent Portal Allows Parents to Manage Student Screen Time
FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage screen time on FCPS-issued devices. Through the portal, parents can control their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing during designated After-School Hours while students are off the FCPS network.
These controls are active Monday - Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM (even on student holidays) and all day Saturday and Sunday. They do not affect district filtering policies during the instructional day.
Parents can register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
For more information about the Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.
