Dear Families,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and joyful Thanksgiving break. We’re glad to have our students back — and right back to learning and school routines this week.
A quick reminder because today’s cold, rainy weather makes it especially important: please send your child to school with warm outdoor clothing for recess — a coat, hat, and gloves — and label each item with your child’s name. When items are labeled we can return them quickly if they get misplaced.
If inclement weather affects the school day, FCPS notifies families through multiple channels: email, text, social media, the FCPS website, and local news channels. Please make sure your contact information is up to date so you receive alerts.
If your family needs assistance getting warm clothing for your child, please contact the school office — we’re here to help.
Thank you for your partnership. I’m looking forward to a great week ahead!
Warmly,
Mary Duffy
Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break. It’s time to break that cycle. Give your child the gift of attendance and help build a habit of attendance.
Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance
Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year.
As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.
Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

Wednesday, December 10 is an Early Release Wednesday. Students will dismiss at 12:55 PM unless they have previously signed up for supervision.
Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15
Parents and guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services must submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Ms. Jen Spollen jlspollen@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2025.
Each year, families can submit a referral for full-time AAP services any time from the first day of school through December 15. No late referrals for full-time AAP services will be accepted.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of six trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services.
Next Steps for Parents
Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of their child’s materials after February 20, 2026, by emailing Ms. Jen Spollen jlspollen@fcps.edu
At the elementary level, referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened by the school. If you miss the full-time referral deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific or part-time AAP services for the remainder of the year.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs webpage.

✅ Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. We will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For more information, visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
