Bodhi Day - Monday, December 8, is a religious and cultural observance day recognizing the Buddhist holiday of Bodhi. There is school on this day; however, specific events that cannot be made up will not be held.
Guidelines on Religious Accommodations for Students
FCPS makes reasonable accommodations so individuals are able to meet their personal religious obligations. Parents, teachers, and administrators are encouraged to consult the Guidelines for Religious Activities for Students.

⏰ Early Release Wednesday

It is hard to believe that we are in the holiday season already!
We know that this time is exciting for many but can also be very challenging and stressful for some families within our community. In the past, we have been able to support many families during this time because of the kind donations from our Hayfield family! HES counselors will be collecting donations again for gift cards to big box stores/grocery stores (ex: Walmart, Target, Aldi, Giant, Amazon) until December 17th.
Please send in any donations in an envelope with “Holiday Donations” written on the front with your child and it can be given to their teacher. You may also drop off any donations at the front office and we will ensure they go to support our community directly.
We appreciate you all so much as you help us make this a happy and memorable season for all our Hayfield community.
Help fill the box!!! Hayfield ES Student Council Association (SCA) is hoping to spread an abundance of warmth and joy to our community this winter season! If you would like to help, please donate NEW hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and NEW unwrapped gifts. These will go directly to Koinonia. Our Winter Giving Box is here and located just inside Door 1. Collections continue through December 15th.
For parents of students in grades 2–6 interested in referring their child for full-time AAP services, an informational video is available here on our Hayfield website. If you have questions after watching the video and would like to meet with our AART, please complete the Google Form linked here.
To initiate the screening process, please submit the following documents to AART Avery Rothman (agrothman@fcps.edu) on or before December 15, 2025. Late submissions cannot be accepted.

Submitting a full-time AAP referral form starts a process that begins at the local school and is completed at the central office level. Our school will compile a portfolio with multiple data points, which are reviewed holistically. At the central office, a committee of trained professionals evaluates the portfolio to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are shared in April. Parents may request a copy of the submitted portfolio by emailing Avery Rothman once materials have been sent for central selection.

As the weather gets colder, please send in an updated change of clothes for your child (if needed) that is appropriate for winter. Thank you for helping us keep students warm and prepared!
 ❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
Please assume your children will be outside for recess each day, even when it's chilly! FCPS policies only limit outdoor activities when the windchill dips into negative temperatures, so your child will likely have outdoor recess on most days. Your children should be prepared with a coat, hat, and gloves or mittens. It is also a good idea to write their names inside each item, the extra gear is more easily misplaced. If your family needs assistance providing appropriate cold-weather garments:
- Call our office at (703) 924-4500 and ask to speak with our social worker, Mr. Herston Phillips.
- Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880: multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.
If your child has a documented health condition that affects their ability to engage in outdoor activities when it's cold, please call the office and ask to speak with our clinic aide Ms. Debi Richardson. We need to establish or update your child's Health Plan so staff can support their health needs.
The new volunteer management system, Volunteer FCPS, allows individuals to search and register for volunteer opportunities at our school or across the school district. Anyone interested in volunteering at Hayfield must:
- Create a profile in Volunteer FCPS.
- Register for opportunities through Volunteer FCPS.
- Sign in and out of schools using the visitor kiosk on EVERY visit – no exceptions.
Field trip chaperone opportunities are classified as Level 2 (not requiring a comprehensive background check that includes fingerprinting).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal confirmation that you have no history of violent felonies, physical or sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude (dishonesty, fraud, things that are immoral by society’s standards). English Empowerment Center
Register for beginning-level English classes. Sign-up for any in-person English classes (excluding Intensive English class) on Wednesday, December 17 from 5:30pm-7:30pm at James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd, Falls Church, VA 22042. Space is limited.

Apply Anytime for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.
If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year.
Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s a great way to make your food budget go further and save time from packing meals. Learn more about FCPS Food and Nutrition.

 Fairfax County Public Library’s (FCPL) winter reading adventure has begun and will continue through Saturday, January 31, 2026. Visit your local FCPL branch or their Winter Reading Adventure website to register and get a sneak peek at the prizes.
Check out their Winter Reading Events webpage to learn about gingerbread house making, crafting sessions, New Year’s Eve celebrations, and book discussions.
Winter Break camps and activities are now open for registration. If you have an eligibility letters from Food and Nutrition Services, make sure to keep those to apply for scholarships and discounts.

● Camp Fairfax Winter and Spring Break Camp - Registration has started for Kindergarten to sixth grade children residing in Fairfax County or City of Fairfax.
