Dr. Reid visited Woodburn this morning to see how arrival was going in the snow! She checked in with our bus drivers, staff, and students.
Our 3rd and 4th grade Young Scholars recently took part in a memorable and unique experience. Woodburn students were invited to help decorate Senator Mark Warner’s office Christmas tree using their own handmade ornaments.
Our students did a fantastic job representing Woodburn, and several were even interviewed about their experience. Their segment aired on NBC4 and Telemundo 44!
We are so proud of our Young Scholars and grateful for this memorable field trip that brought creativity, community, and holiday cheer together.

📚 Halfway Through Learning about Government and Citizenship in Language Arts
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 3 in Language Arts! Students have explored how the government works, why it's important, and how laws change.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What’s one rule at home or school you wish you could change and why?
- Activity: Play a short game (like musical chairs or Simon Says) but change one rule. Discuss how rules help things run smoothly.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15
Parents and guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services must submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Ms. Khan via email at nhkhan@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2025.
Each year, families can submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services any time from the first day of school through December 15. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services.

Next Steps for Parents
Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of their child’s materials after February 20, 2026, by emailing Ms. Khan at nhkhan@fcps.edu.
At the elementary level, referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened by the school. If you miss the full-time referral deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific or part-time AAP services for the remainder of the year.
At the middle school level, honors courses are open to all students.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
We ended our snowy day with surprise stickers to celebrate everyone who was able to be at school today! We love that our Wildcats show up!
✅ Please Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete the survey as soon as possible.
Our school will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page or watch this video about why Impact Aid matters.

Volunteer FCPS Helps Community Members Connect With Schools
Volunteer FCPS allows individuals to search and register for volunteer opportunities across the division. It helps ensure a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must:
- Create a profile in Volunteer FCPS.
- Register for opportunities through Volunteer FCPS.
- Sign in and out of schools using our visitor kiosk.
Individuals can complete a volunteer orientation on the Volunteer FCPS website. View Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about the volunteer levels.
Recent Updates to Volunteer Opportunity Levels
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers. Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
As part of the application, all volunteers sign a statement confirming they have not been convicted of violent crimes, crimes against children, or other serious misconduct.
Field trip chaperone opportunities are now classified as Level 2 (not requiring a comprehensive background check).
Our drama club had their final production yesterday. It was wonderful having such a lovely audience attend!
Lunch Truck – Thai Tuk Tuk, Monday, December 9th
Treat yourself to some delicious Thai cuisine! Thai Tuk Tuk will be serving up their flavorful dishes during lunch. Be sure to stop by and enjoy a tasty midday meal.
Clean Kitchen Night - Chuck E. Cheese, December 17th, 3-9pm
Chuck E. Cheese will be visiting our school on the day of Clean Kitchen Night! After school, join us at Chuck-Five Guys in Fairfax to support the PTA. Please give the cashier Woodburn's name, and a portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to us. In addition, all staff with a valid school ID badge can enjoy a free personal meal (choice of personal pizza & drink OR unlimited salad bar & drink). We hope to see you there!
Our Gingerbread Decorating Event is coming up on Friday, 12/19, and we need your help to make it magical!
We’re looking for parent volunteers to assist with classroom decorating and event prep. If you’re able to help, please sign up here.
We’re also collecting nut-free candy and decorating supplies. Suggested donations include mini marshmallows, small colorful candies (Skittles, M&Ms), chocolate chips, gumdrops, and other fun toppings. Please send in any contributions for your class by Monday, 12/15.
If you’d prefer to support the event with a monetary donation to help cover supply costs, we’d be truly grateful—every bit helps us keep this tradition going for our students! Suggested donation of $2-3 per student can be made here.
Thank you for helping make this a sweet celebration for our school community! 🍬🍭🎄
❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.
🙋♂️ Attendance Is Important Every Day!
Every year, absences increase in the weeks before and after winter break. Give your child the gift of education and help build a habit of attendance. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources.

Monitoring Support for Your Child in ParentVUE
All FCPS schools use an approach called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to make sure every student gets the help they need to learn.
MTSS helps school teams deliver high-quality instruction for all students and provide extra time, support, and interventions as needed. Families are partners in this process. We will share information about your child’s individual learning, needs, and progress.
You may view your child's intervention plans and progress in SIS ParentVUE. Expect progress to be updated quarterly, with report card due dates.
What is SIS ParentVUE and How Can You Sign Up?
If you do not already have a SIS ParentVUE account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success! Through SIS ParentVUE, you are able to view your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also access special reports for your student like progress reports and assessment score reports.
Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.
