Last week students & staff appreciated a full 5 days of learning. Thank you to all families who attended our Annual Family Night! We had record attendance with staff sharing activities focused on both math & literacy. The Book Fair was busy all week helping families & teachers update their libraries. We are so grateful for the donations from our PTA and generous families that allowed many students a free book from the fair.
On Friday, I enjoyed catching all our students & staff that participated in Matching Day, joined morning meeting with Mrs. Thompson & Ms. Johnson's 1st graders, and spent a specials' block with Mrs. Kellogg's class participating in Strategy Lab games.
We ask for your support in completing the annual FCPS Impact Aid Form if you haven't yet. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in and a paper copy was sent home to anyone we were still missing forms. Please complete it as soon as possible. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. For more information, visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, Ms. Ulsh and I would like to share our appreciation for our amazing school community. This season of gratitude gives us a chance to reflect on all the things we’re thankful for. We wish you a safe, relaxing, and joyful Thanksgiving filled with time to connect with family and friends.

There’s a story behind the success of every FCPS student — a story about what’s possible when FCPS receives the appropriate funding for world-class teachers, rigorous academics, and future-ready learning experiences. At FCPS, student success starts with a strong budget!
We’re currently developing our Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which will be presented by Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid to the School Board in January. During this process, we’ll be sharing our budget story with you. The different chapters will explain the impact of chronic underfunding, why strong funding benefits all of Fairfax County, what’s at stake when our schools don’t get the support they need, and what Fairfax County residents can do to support our schools, students, and teachers. We invite you to follow along and learn how you can help our community write its next chapter!
Parents in kindergarten through sixth grade have been notified in ParentVue, on Progress Reports, or in a letter in Wednesday folder (if parent does not have ParentVue access) if their student is required to receive a reading plan (state-required reading intervention). FCPS has recorded a webinar all about reading plans that parents can access here. Parents can log into ParentVue and look in the MTSS tab for progress monitoring data throughout the year. It is our goal that every Lemon Road student finishes the year reading on grade level and all grade 3 - 6 students pass the Reading SOL!
Longfellow Middle School will be hosting a Curriculum Night for rising 7th grade families (current 6th grade students) at Longfellow MS on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This evening session aims to provide parents with information that will help their incoming 7th grade student with the transition to middle school. Families will have the opportunity to explore elective course offerings and hear from a variety of Longfellow staff about the courses and programs offered to 7th grade students. Students and staff will also be available to answer questions. If inclement weather occurs, the event will be rescheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We look forward to welcoming you to Longfellow!
Parents and guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services must submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Taylor Argue no later than December 15, 2025. Each year, families can submit a referral for full-time AAP services any time from the first day of school through December 15. No late referrals for full-time AAP services will be accepted.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of six or more trained professionals from across FCPS will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of their child’s materials after February 20, 2026 from Taylor Argue. Please visit the AAP webpage for more information.
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services will host dinners for our students, families, and anyone in the community who needs a meal this month! These dinners will offer a welcoming environment where families can connect over a warm meal. Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving-inspired dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. on: 11/24 at Herndon High School and Justice High School 11/25 at Annandale High School and Mount Vernon High School. Meals will be offered at no cost for both children and adults on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required, and you do not need to be an FCPS student or family to receive a meal. Learn more about the meal and view the full menu.
