A Few Reminders

  • Please Bring Your ID  - Please remember that you must have your ID with you in order to pick up students or to volunteer in a classroom or have lunch with your student.  This needs to be the physical ID, not just a picture of it on your phone.  Thank you for helping us keep your children safe.
  • Please indicate the reason when your child is absent - Please be specific when you are letting us know of your child's absence: illness, doctor appointment, family trip, etc.  This will allow us to record the correct attendance code for your child's absence.

Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15

Full-Time AAP Application process

Required: Parents in grades 2-6 who wish to refer to their children for AAP Full-Time Services for the 2026-27 school year need to sign and complete the AAP Full-Time Referral Form by December 15th. Please do not wait for the NGAT results to come back to initiate a referral.

Required: (for any student that has a 504/IEP):  New this year!  Families of students with 504s/IEPs must also complete the 504/IEP consent form            .

Optional Documents:

Parent Questionnaire (with ratings circled, examples underneath, and signature)

*2  pages of Student Work Samples (PDF only..no animated files)

Since FCPS’ services are academic, it is most helpful for the work samples provided by families to be in areas such as reading and writing, science, social studies, and math.  Although art samples can show creativity or a strong sense of design, please keep in mind the committee is going to be looking for exceptional strengths aligned with advanced academic services.

-2 pages only (singled sided, not front to back)

               -8 ½ x 11 pieces of paper

              -1-2 samples per page

-no letters of recommendations, awards, or extracurricular activities permitted

              -completed by the student

-stories/writing must not exceed the 2 pages

-a brief description on the sample noting what you would like the committee to notice. It is preferred that the student describe the sample and their thinking process behind the sample

- A separate page describing the work samples is accepted and won’t count as one of the two pages.

The referral form and optional documents are due electronically to Cathy Lahr at cclahr@fcps.edu by December 15th.   Please attach all documents in one email using separate attachments. No late referrals will be accepted.

Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)

FCPS is participating in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5). VQB5 is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of the curriculum. Refer to “VQB5 for Families English/Spanish” for more information.

Lightspeed Parent Portal Allows Parents to Manage Student Screen Time

FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage screen time on FCPS-issued devices. Through the portal, parents can control their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing during designated After-School Hours while students are off the FCPS network.

These controls are active Monday - Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM (even on student holidays) and all day Saturday and Sunday. They do not affect district filtering policies during the instructional day.

Parents can register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.

For more information about the Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.
