Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Community,
As we head into our short week, time with family, and the Thanksgiving break, I want to express my deep gratitude for the incredible support we continue to receive from our community. This year, we have seen an increased level of need across Northern Virginia—and certainly here at Woodson. For example, we have experienced a fourfold increase in families accessing our food pantry. I want to personally thank Mel Silva, our dedicated family liaison, who has gone above and beyond to ensure our school is meeting the needs of our community and coordinating efforts with our PTSO and many caring partners.
Once again, our community has stepped up in remarkable ways—raising thousands of dollars in gift cards and donations, and fully stocking our food pantry so that every one of our families can enjoy the upcoming holidays. This generosity truly reflects who we are as a community and showcases the very best of Woodson.
The spirit of giving and service has always defined our Woodson community. Our parent organizations—including the PTSO, Robotics Boosters, Orchestra Boosters, Band Patrons, Chorus Boosters, Theatre Boosters, and Athletic Boosters—continue to step forward in extraordinary ways to support our students. As I learn more each year about the vast contributions these volunteers make, I am honored to serve this school and this community.
We are also fortunate to have the support of many sponsors who partner with us annually, including Educate Fairfax, Ourisman Fairfax Toyota, Colonial Pipeline, and Asha-Jyothi, to name just a few!
We feel a deep sense of gratitude for everyone who invests their time, resources, and care into our school. The best part is that this same commitment to service and generosity are reflected by our students in extraordinary ways.
I hope you each have the opportunity to relax, spend meaningful time with loved ones, and enjoy a wonderful holiday. We look forward to welcoming our students back after the break.

🖥️New Parent Controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal
- FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
- These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
- For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.
- Review the following resources to familiarize yourself with the Lightspeed Parent Portal resources.
Federal Impact Aid Form
FCPS is asking all families, regardless if you are affiliated with the military or work on Federal Property, to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
Register for ParentVUE
Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.
Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility
If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:
-
Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.
-
Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.
To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.
The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.
Checking out early?
The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!
Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!
For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.
Important Reminders:
-
Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.
-
If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.
Go Paperless!
Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

Counselors Corner
Ninth grade students received the Signs of Suicide (SOS) lesson to learn how to spot symptoms of depression in themselves and others, and to discern what to do if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. Counselors and Clinicians supported students’ emotional wellness as a follow-up. We encourage you and your student to peruse our Social/Emotional padlet which offers emergency information and resources for mental health support. It also links to our Woodson Wellness google site for students to use when they need brain breaks and stress relief.
Counselors have been busy! We have already written 400 letters of recommendation so far and expect to keep sending transcripts, writing letters, and sending documents through early 2026. Seniors, please be aware of deadlines to ensure that your documents are submitted on time. Additionally, if you would like a letter of recommendation from your counselor, we require 20 school days ahead of your deadline. Complete the google form before submitting your transcript request form and come get help before school any Wednesday in the Career Center! We again hosted a college application support workshop on Nov. 24 to support seniors.
Student Services administered the World Language Exam to 58 students on November 21. You can find out more about the World Language Exam here.
FAFSA is open! We encourage students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Here are some resources from the U.S. Department of Education to help complete the FAFSA: Pro Tips for completing the FAFSA, announcements, and FAFSA help.
