Message from Mantua Admin

Dear Mantua Families,

What a fantastic week for learning and growing we had!  Mantua strives to nurture a space that is welcoming, inclusive and safe for all students.  To encourage this culture, we hosted a Veterans day breakfast for military-connected families, complete with a heartwarming and stellar performance by our 5th grade chorus!  Classes spent time this week learning about military service and the unique sacrifices and challenges that service brings.  One 3rd grade class had a serviceman speak to the class and they also took the opportunity to write letters to deployed service members, sending smiles around the world. Mantua was also recognized as one of 49 schools at the November 13 school board meeting for our Purple Star designation.  We have so much to cheer about!

Please mark your calendars for:

  • We are pleased to host our annual Thanksgiving luncheon for families, held during special lunchtimes on November 24th!  Please see the schedule below. Be sure to add money to your child’s lunch account if you will be purchasing a lunch for yourself or other family members!
  • 4th and 5th grade students are invited to attend a Math Workshop, hosted by Woodson HS students.  This is always a wonderful and informative event!  Please see the flyers that went out in Tuesday folders for details on times and how to RSVP.

Have a wonderful fall weekend!

Take good care,

Ms. Shannon, Mrs. Vaughan, Ms. Maurer

AAP referrals

FCPS offers a continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services to meet students’ academic needs.  Families of students in grades 2 – 6 who wish to refer their student for full-time AAP services must submit a referral by December 15.  We are unable to accept late referrals.  Families should not wait to receive NGAT scores before making a referral.  For information about how to refer a student for AAP services, please contact Mantua’s Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART), Kathy Van Dyke, by Talking Points or by email at kkvandyke@fcps.edu.  Forms and information may also be found at the FCPS AAP web page.

Weekly Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight is our way to recognize Mantua's incredible staff! Each week, we recognize a group of staff members. Check them out on Mantua ES Instagram. This coming week's featured staff are members of our 6th Grade Team: Paul Malc, Katy Mankin, Caity Smith and Olivia Kang.

Please use the Spotlight Submission Form to share a positive message with them. We will share the messages with them at the end of next week.

Thank you for helping us make Staff Spotlight a fun and engaging way to celebrate our school community. We appreciate your enthusiasm and support!

Thanksgiving Luncheon

We are thrilled to welcome families to our Thanksgiving Luncheon this year, on November 24th!  We have critical details below about our special lunch schedule that day.

Family members are welcome to join their student at the designated lunchtimes.  Meals for non-Mantua parents and children are $5.00 each, payable through your child’s MySchoolBucks school lunch account.  You are not required to purchase a meal in order to share the time with your child!  Please plan to arrive a few minutes in advance of your child’s scheduled lunch time as we have many people to serve in a short amount of time.  Your timeliness will help the process move more smoothly.

Apply Anytime for Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.

If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year.

Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s a great way to make your food budget go further and save time from packing meals. Learn more about FCPS Food and Nutrition

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots to all FCPS students at no cost. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year.

Immunization clinics will take place on:

  • Saturday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Frost Middle School.
  • Tuesday, November 18, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., at Willow Oaks Administrative Center.

Participation is voluntary. Additional Immunization Resources are available online. Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment for their student.️

Tutoring Resources for Families

Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
