Dear Woodley Hills Family,

I hope you've all had a great week! Our students are doing an awesome job diving into their learning this fall. We're very proud to share that Woodley Hills has been recognized as a Purple Star School for the third time! This special honor means we are dedicated to supporting our military students and their families. It's exciting to see all the activities happening in our classrooms as everyone works hard and helps each other. Remember to check your child's backpack and emails from the school so you don't miss any important notes about what your child is learning or other updates. We appreciate you being such a great partner in your child's education!

I want to make sure you remember one of our school's most fun events: Turkey Bingo! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, November 20, at 5:30 PM. We hold this event right here in the school cafeteria. It’s a chance for all of us to get together for a fun evening. The best part? You can win a Thanksgiving Turkey for your family or a gift card! It’s a huge community event, and we hope you and your family can come and join in the fun.

Thank you again for all your support.

Sincerely,

Dr. LaChelle R. Williams, Principal

We’re excited to announce that the beloved Scholastic Book Fair is just around the corner! This event is always a favorite among students and plays a big role in supporting our school’s reading programs. To make it a success, we need the help of our amazing parent volunteers. Whether you can spare an hour or a day, your time and energy make a huge difference. Please consider signing up to volunteer—we can’t do it without you!  If you can volunteer then please note that FCPS now requires ALL volunteers to register and apply on the new system Volunteer FCPS.  So you would need to register online with FCPS and then sign-up at the WHES sign-up genius to pick a date and time.  Thank you for taking the extra step to help out!

The Fair will be held December 1-5th.  All classes will have time to shop during the school day.  We will also be open for family shopping on Literacy Night, December 4th from 5:00-7:00pm.  Can’t wait to see you there!

November is National Family Engagement Month

The Academy offers a variety of positive and engaging learning opportunities and meaningful connections to transform the FCPS experience into a welcoming environment for all families.

Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for All Learners

December 12, 10-11:30 a.m.

This presentation explores how trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning (SEL) support student well-being and academic success. We discuss the impact of stress and trauma on children, how it can manifest in their behavior, and the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments. We will highlight protective factors that foster student resilience and growth. Additionally, we will showcase helpful practices at school that teach and reinforce essential skills such as self-awareness, self-management, and relationship building. Finally, we will explore practical strategies families can use at home to strengthen these skills and nurture resilience in their children.  Register here

Volunteer Registration Update

Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.

If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.

Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.

Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).

To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.

Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots to all FCPS students at no cost. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year.

Immunization clinics will take place on:

  • Tuesday, November 18, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., at Willow Oaks Administrative Center.

Participation is voluntary. Additional Immunization Resources are available online. Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment for their student.️
