XC Wrap up

💛“That’s a Wrap!” - XC 2025🏃

What an incredible Cross Country season for our Eagles! From the very first practice to the final meet, our athletes showed hard work, dedication, and true Thoreau spirit.

This year brought improved times across the board—including one standout athlete who beat his Herndon MS course time from last year by a full FIVE minutes! Every meet showed growth, determination, and heart.

Our school spirit was undeniable, with compliments from other schools about our sportsmanship and positivity. Whether it was warm-up drills, pacing one another during the race, or cheering at the finish line, our Eagles truly embodied the idea that no teammate is ever left behind. Runners supported and encouraged one another every step of the way.

And the bonding this season was unforgettable:
🍩 Donut celebrations after meets
🎶 Singing songs on the bus
💛 Constant encouragement, laughter, and community

Toward the end of the season, our team experienced the heartbreaking loss of our beloved Coach Montes. Even with a few meets still ahead, our athletes came together in a powerful and uplifting way — supporting each other, lifting spirits, and honoring Coach Montes through their teamwork and resilience. The team celebrated and appreciated the love, time, and dedication he poured into every runner. His presence, impact, and enthusiasm will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

And as he would say…

“THAT’S A WRAP!”

Thank you all for a great season and a special thank you to the following Thoreau staff for their coaching and coordination of all things Cross Country: Krissy Schnebel, Kerrie Turner and Raja Anderson.

Go Eagles! 🦅💛

Please Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Thoreau will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Monday, November 17th.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Changes to Middle and High School Report Card Feedback

With the first quarter of the school year having ended on Friday, October 31, families can expect student report cards to be available this week.

FCPS has revised the way teachers provide feedback on report cards, so you may notice some new comments. Specifically, comments have been revised to provide more detailed feedback for students and families.

Also, teachers will now include a Work Habits mark each quarter for each student. This scale provides feedback on students’ time management, organization, assignment completion, and overall effort in class. This is meant as feedback to families and will not appear on a student’s transcript.

View the Middle and High School Grading and Reporting webpage for more information.

November is National Family Engagement Month

Family Engagement Month is a time to remember that parents and caregivers are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers.

The FCPS Family Academy supports the continued success and well-being of each and every student within the FCPS community. The Academy offers a variety of positive and engaging learning opportunities and meaningful connections to transform the FCPS experience into a welcoming environment for all families.

Apply Anytime for Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.

If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year.

Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s a great way to make your food budget go further and save time from packing meals. Learn more about FCPS

🧥 Lost & Found Reminder

At the end of each month, we go through the lost and found to search for item names. If they have names, we email the student and parent. We then donate any unclaimed lost and found items, such as clothes, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc., that don't have names. Please make sure your student checks the lost and found in the cafeteria regularly for any lost items. Thank you.
