Student Prayer Accommodations

Wintertime is coming and with the resetting of our clocks, students who observe afternoon prayer may not make it home in time for afternoon prayer with their families.  Starting on November 5th, we will be offering afternoon prayer opportunities at school before dismissal each day for students who require the accommodations.  If you would like a prayer accommodation for your child during the winter months, please complete this google form.  Your child will be given a pass to dismiss at 2:00 each day to use the prayer space.  Please note: students who are granted a prayer accommodation will miss the last 10 minutes of instruction for their last class of the day.  Additionally, the accommodation can be revoked if students do not utilize it appropriately.  If a prayer accommodation is revoked, you will be contacted by your child's administrator with an explanation.

FCPS News!

Lightspeed Parent Portal Allows Parents to Manage Student Screen Time

FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage screen time on FCPS-issued devices. Through the portal, parents can control their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing during designated After-School Hours while students are off the FCPS network.

These controls are active Monday - Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM (even on student holidays) and all day Saturday and Sunday. They do not affect district filtering policies during the instructional day.

Parents can register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.

For more information about the Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. We receive federal Impact Aid grant money due to the significant federal employment and military presence within our community. Because federal property is not taxable, school divisions with military installations, federal lands, or federally supported housing lose local tax revenue.  Federal Impact Aid helps local school districts offset the cost of educating students in areas affected by federal activity. These funds are added to the school division’s general operating budget and are essential to maintaining the high-quality education FCPS provides to all students by providing additional financial support for essential services such as:

  • Staffing and classroom instruction
  • School facilities and maintenance
  • Student transportation

This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12. For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page or watch this video.

When Cell Phones Are Down, Learning and Engagement Are Up: Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free

Cell phones can significantly impact academic performance — research has shown that it takes students 10 minutes or more to shift their focus back to learning after being interrupted by a single cell phone notification! You can help keep our schools phone-free (and your child focused on learning) by:

  • Reminding your child about FCPS’ cell phone policy and telling them why you support it.
  • Contacting your school’s front office (rather than your child directly) if there is a family emergency during the school day.
  • Contacting your child about non-urgent matters before or after the school day.
  • Waiting to respond to non-urgent texts from your child until the school day is over.

Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy. Also, view our Media Balance and Well-Being Toolkit for resources to help your child maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with technology at home.
