šŸ’Ā  Reid Reflects: Addressing the Future of AI

speakers on stage during a panel session

In her reflections this week, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid shared critical conversations that were held during the Meeting the Moment: FCPS Forward – AI and The Future of Learning event.

Dr. Reid emphasized that we are at a critical time where we must choose to shape artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) future rather than let it shape us.Ā

Dr. Reid shared compelling data, noting the rapid transformation of the job landscape: entry-level roles are disappearing, particularly in white-collar sectors, and nearly 40% of the skills required for work will have changed by 2030. But FCPS is ready to meet the moment.

Read more of Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections.

An exciting, hands-on technology learning space, housed at Bucknell Elementary School, opened its doors recently to welcome our youngest learners from across the county.

Thanks to a partnership with Virginia Tech, the Bucknell STEAM Innovation Lab is now open and ready to inspire thousands of FCPS students. The lab gives students as young as kindergarten the chance to explore real-world engineering and technology concepts, sparking early curiosity about how things work and pushing students to think about how they can shape the world around them. FCPS students are talented actors, musicians, and visual artists. Many FCPS high schools participate in the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Critics and Awards Program for High School Theatre, otherwise known as the Cappies.

The Cappies is a program through which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews.

šŸ™‹ Show Up Strong! Build Habits of Success

Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now that will help them graduate on time and help them with time management. Parents and families can play a big role in helping kick-start good attendance habits.

Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered ā€œchronically absent.ā€

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to the school. Visit our Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.
